LC50 Pre-Lab Assignment 1. Describe the purpose of an LC50 study. - It is a way to measure the short-term poisoning potential of a material. It is used to compare the toxic potency of chemicals to cause death. 2. What is the difference between LD50 and LC50? - LC50 refers to the lethal concentration of a chemical in air or water, whereas LD50 refers to the lethal dose given to animals. 3. If the oral LD50 of two common herbicides (rat, oral delivery) are as follows, which of these herbicides is more toxic in this specific scenario? Explain your answer. Atrazine: 3,000 mg/kg (this is mg of Atrazone per kg of body weight of the rat) Glyphosate (Roundup): 4,320 mg/kg - The atrazine is more toxic in this situation because generally the smaller the LD50 value is, the more toxic the chemical is. Therefore, since atrazine has a lower value at 3,000mg/kg compared to glyphosate's value at 4,320 mg/kg, it will be more toxic. 4. List three things an LD50 value can be used for, according to the CCOHS website you looked at. - LD50 can be used as an aid in developing emergency procedures in case of a major spill or accident. - LD50 can assist in developing transportation regulations. - LD50 can help with developing guidelines for appropriate safety clothing and equipment.
