Mechanical Testing Protocol Start-up 1. Log onto the computer. 2. Power on the Instron test instrument (switch on back left) 3. When the LCD counter on right side of machine reaches 1, start the Bluehill software 4. Create a test method (use a compression method). After you are done, return to main Bluehill screen 5. Click Test on the main Bluehill screen to start testing 6. Create a new folder to save your data 7. Select the compression method that you just made Repeat the following for each of your samples: 8. Measure the cross-sectional area of your sample the synthetic materials all have a diameter of 0.5 inches. 9. Set the width of the bottom holders to the same number on each side to make sure the bending is centered. Record the distance between the bending posts in your lab notebook • The distance between the bending posts is equal to the number where you place the bending posts. In the picture below, the distance between the posts is 3 cm (not 6 cm, it is not 3 cm on each side) so you would use 3 cm for length in the bending equation. • Try to get as long as distance between the posts as possible. The longer the distance between the posts, the better the Euler-Bernoullii beam bending equation will represent the experiment. For bone, you are limited, but you can set the posts out fairly wide for the synthetic samples. Beam length / thickness > 20 is best. It is OK to set the length small for shorter samples and longer for longer samples, but just be sure to record the length you used. 10. Load the sample onto the bottom bending posts and manually lower the top post until it just barely touches your sample. If the top post isn’t in contact at the start of the test, you can remove the initial part of the data (when load = 0) during analysis. 11. Click Reset to zero the extension measurement 12. Balance the load cell 13. Begin the test by clicking Start 14. After the test is done, press Return to return the top post to the starting position 15. Remove the sample and clean off the bending posts as needed Saving data 16. Make sure to click Finish for each sample to export the data to a .csv file 17. Check the .csv file is present and has good data in it. If not, you either did not set up the method to correctly save raw data or you likely didn’t press Finish. When finished • Exit the Bluehill software • Turn off the Instron machine • Be sure to clean up all samples and bone fragments. Clean the posts with a little soap and water for disinfection. Do not use bleach because it will corrode the metal parts of the machine. Pre-Lab 11 Thursday, November 16, 2023 10:30 AM Pre-Labs Page 1
