Describe how technology can be misused or overused in the early childhood classroom. Does the belief also hold true for the use of math manipulatives? Conversely, how can teachers be mindful of those students who do not have access to technology or resources in their homes?
Technology can be a great asset in classrooms, providing students with fun, engaging ways to learn. Games are an excellent way for students to practice/learn without feeling like work. However, it can be misused/ overused in the classroom. Many of our students are on devices at home and can benefit from interactions and formal teaching. For example, one student has behavior problems and hardly speaks to anyone. His mom shared that he is on a tablet for eight hours daily. Technology should be used to enhance teaching, not replace teaching. An example of
how technology can be misused in a preschool classroom is when a teacher has a book and chooses to play a person reading the book. A way to overuse it is by replacing reading with videos and music with videos. I recently bought a Bluetooth speaker and made a playlist for music and movement with my students. The difference between playing a video and dancing with them just listening to the music is remarkable. I now have two different playlists, one for fingerplay songs and one for music.
Like technology, manipulatives can be overused. They are designed to help students by physically representing abstract math concepts. Nevertheless, once students understand the concepts, we should encourage them to refrain from using them, as this can hinder them from thinking abstractly (Deer, 2022). My district is Title I; once a child is in elementary, they are each provided with a laptop, and during COVID-19, students are provided with the internet. However, if that is not the case, teachers should not assign work that requires students to have internet access. If the assignment requires students to research, the teacher can allow class time for them to search for information and print it so that they can complete the work at home.

Some teachers think learning centers require a level of creativity they do not believe they possess or are too time-consuming to create and maintain. What is your stance on the preparation and time required to provide centers to early learners?
Some centers can be time-consuming to create/maintain. However, it should be done if it is a center that will make learning effective and fun. Educators must have different centers that support concepts as it provides different ways for our students to understand what we are teaching (Tankersley, 2023). Also, if teachers collaborate, they can create different centers and take turns using them. However, when creating centers, we must consider making them as durable as possible by laminating and storing them properly.
Teachers no longer need to be creative to prepare centers. The internet and websites like Pinterest and Teachers Pay Teachers have allowed educators to find centers to support any subject. Centers can be purchased on Lakeshore and other websites/stores. In conclusion, there are various ways for teachers to create and maintain centers. Teachers must find the most effective way to provide them for their students as they support learning.
