Discussion Question Technology in the teaching of Mathematics An interactive website and program for elementary mathematics that I have researched and has proven to be fun and educational is called Plickers. Pickers is a classroom response program that allows teachers to create questions of a chosen subject and content and turn into an interactive classroom quiz and game. The programs allow the teacher to use the app without having devices for each student. The students will each receive a paper with a digital code that has four sides, labeled A, B, C and D. The student will hold up the card with their chosen letter response at the top. The teacher will then use a electronic device with a camera to scan the student cards and record their responses. The electronic projector is signed into the Plickers program and displays classroom questions and the recorded students’ responses. The teacher then reveals the correct answer, and the program displays the percentage of students that answered in each letter. This technology has many strengths with the top one being how interested and engage each student is during the activity. This program makes learning fun! Another strength is that it allows teachers to incorporate technology into the classroom without requiring each child to have a electronic device. The only small weakness that I have found with the program is that it can be very time consuming to enter in all the information for the class and create each quiz. It requires the teacher to create each content quiz with all the questions and answers, print of the scan codes for each student and then label them with their name and number identifier. I have always heard and thought that elementary school students can use a calculator once they have mastered basic operations. However, our textbook states “A variety of tools (including calculators) should be accessible for students to select and use appropriately as they engage in doing mathematics” (Van de Walle et al., 2018). Younger grade students or children who are behind grade level that need more assistance may need to use calculators so they can explore numbers and patterns without feeling overwhelmed. A few activities that can help children develop conceptual understanding using a calculator are the mental calculator challenge and the broken calculator activities. Calculator challenge activities help children add numbers mentally and challenge them to mentally remember the sum before the calculator tells them. The students can enter any number into the calculator then add another number and say the sum before hitting the equals sign on the calculator. The broken calculator activity challenges students to use only certain keys on the calculator to create specific values. Students are given a worksheet with 6 sums. Using the keys 2 and 3 only students must create the 6 sums using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division using only those two numbers. The broken calculator challenge is an appropriate activity for a 5 th grade level. My son and his friend are in 5 th grade, and I did this activity with them for fun. They worked as partners to complete the worksheet using a calculator. They had a lot of fun challenging themselves and one another to find the answer. They had to use mental math and strategies in order to come up with new ways to try on the calculator to find the sum. This activity would be a great activity for the whole classroom!
