1 A. Identify an instructional need or a challenge related to student learning that you see in your current practice as a teacher. An instructional need that I see in my current practice as a teacher is that many of my 2nd grade students struggle with basic K-1st math skills such as addition, subtraction. This is now affecting the math skills they are supposed to master in 2nd grade. I know that I work at an “At Risk” school and many of these students have difficulty understanding as well as concentrating, so I'm aware that they play a factor in those basic math skills they haven't mastered yet. B. Develop a professional growth plan to address the need or challenge you identified in part A by doing the following: 1. Identify a measurable long-term professional goal to address the need or challenge from part A. A professional growth plan I’ve incorporated to help address this challenge is collaboration with my other grade team members. My team and I have worked together after seeing this challenge for students, to incorporate flex days throughout our pacing schedule. Flex days are when we spend time addressing basic math skills that our students struggle with and as they master one skill, we introduce another skill that builds upon the next. We have included 2-3 flex days per month. These flex days help the students learn important content and skills that are needed for them to succeed. a. Explain how the long-term goal from part B1 will help you address the need or challenge from part A.
2 Incorporating flex days to work on basic math skills will help students master them. Basic skills are a floor, not a ceiling. Students must learn these skills so that they can move on to more demanding mathematics—algebra, geometry that we began to present towards the end of the school year to help prepare them for 3rd grade. b. Identify three measurable short-term goals that will be instrumental in helping you achieve the long-term goal from part B1. 3 measurable goals I have in place to address math skills in addition and subtraction are: 1. Exploring new teaching methods 2. Involve parents more 3. Integrate Technology ii. Provide a timeline for the steps you outlined in part B1bi, including a specific number of days or hours for the completion of each step. I intend on exploring new teaching methods in presenting addition and subtraction to my students to help strengthen their knowledge and provide better instruction for them. I also believe that exploring and embracing new ideas in presenting material to them will result in better retention in the subject matter. I will use the flex days set aside to present the new teaching methods which equates to 2-3 days per month. My second goal to address math skills in addition and subtraction is involving the parents by notifying them of the issue at hand and asking that they spend at least 15 minutes at night going over the practice work being sent home to help facilitate in increasing basic math skills. My last goal is to integrate technology during extra free time we may have. Our school provides us a a great deal of paid
3 online resource that I will use. One particular website is called Zearn. I am to set them up on the skill that they are needing help with the most and each time they master a part of the skill they are able to progress to the next skill. 2. Identify a second measurable long-term professional goal to address the need or challenge in part A. Incorporating the basic math skills into lesson plans. As I am reviewing my lesson plans and annotating them, I will add in addition and subtraction problems in the fluency part of my lesson plan. a. Explain how the long-term goal from part B2 will help you address the need or challenge from part A. Adding in math skills that my students struggle with help to give that extra practice and support in mastering the skill. b. Identify three measurable short-term goals that will be instrumental in helping you achieve the long-term goal from part B2. 1. Student engagement 2. Continuing education 3. Making learning fun i. Outline the actionable steps that you can take to achieve the short-term goals from part B2b. Student engagement is important and essential for learning and also needed for the students I teach. Many have short attention spans and are very active, so keeping them engaged will help. I will try to incorporate student- centered activities and/or student-led projects incorporated in my lesson plans. Continuing education in curriculum and instruction, as I'm doing now will make a great deal of a difference for my students now and my future students. 4 to enhance your educational career by building strong learning opportunities. I will also be given the tool needed to become an expert in instructional theory and practice, and to better help engage students and deliver improved learning outcomes. And my 3rd short term goal will be making learning fun. I will take the worksheets and or material being used during flex days and turn them into games and or projects. This will help to motivate students to master basic math skills. ii. Provide a timeline for the steps you outlined in part B2bi, including a specific number of days or hours for the completion of each step. I plan to take use 1 day from 2-3 flex days to incorporate the 3 short term goals which equates to once per month. C. Explain how making and achieving long- and short-term goals can help you to continually improve your instructional practice. Making and achieving long and short term goals can help me to continually improve my instructional practice because it allows me to take a deeper look into what my students need to be successful and challenge myself to help make them successful by assuring that I accomplish the goals I know that my future leaders can achieve.
