What Is The Colorado Measures
of Academic Success (CMAS)?
What is CMAS? CMAS are Colorado’s common measurement of student’s progress
in Language Math, Arts, and Science at the end of the school year (CMA,2023). What Grade Levels Take the CMAS Exams?
CMAS for Language Arts and Math are taken each year starting at 3
rd
grade and continuing through 8
th grade. The Science CMAS is taken in 5
th
, 7
th
, and 11
th
grades. Why take the CMAS test?
CMAS allows the student to demonstrate what they have learned over the school year. Results of CMAS tell you, as parents, how effectively your school is teaching all students and identifies your child’s progress
in achieving the academic grade-level expectations. The results also provide information to the school district to ensure that the school is being properly supportive.
Results can show where there are gaps in learning and allow adjustments to be made.
Finally, policymakers and school boards can
identify which, if any, schools need extra assistance and/or resources. CMAS Accommodations
Some accommodations that are available for CMAS are:
How the test is presented (large print, braille, translated, oral presentation)
How the student answers the test questions (responds in primary language, assistive technology)
Where the student takes the CMAS (being
alone in a separate room, small group)
Changing the schedule of the CMAS (extra time, breaking up into sections)

How Do Teachers Use NAEP
Results?
Teachers can view each state’s report cards for specific grade levels to see the range of student progress and focus on any “problem” areas that the students are having difficulty comprehending. NAEP Accommodations
Accommodations for the NAEP accommodations are to those for state examinations but may differ slightly. Accommodations include closed captioning, scratch paper, extra time, breaks, and high contrast text for visually impaired students. The NAEP doesn’t allow read-aloud for any part of the test except for instructions. Decoding words is part of the measuring framework. “Never strive for
perfection, strive
for progress.”
What is the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)?
NAEP is the survey of student achievements and measures what students have learned in a variety of subjects such as reading/writing, math, science, and economics. The NAEP is a nationwide survey which allows states to compare how their students are doing compared to other states around the country. NAEP Results and Scores
Results are presented in two ways: Average scores on the subject scale and percentages of students reaching the achievement levels.
The scores are averaged on a scale from 0 to 500 and individual scores are not reported. Achievement level scores are reported as NAEP Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. Students performing at or above Proficient demonstrate solid academic performance and competency over difficult subject matter.
Level scores DO NOT represent grade level proficiency. References:
