1 Informational Interview Brittany Jewart First Term Experience & Tutoring Services, University of Maryland Global Campus PACE 111: Program and Career Exploration Candace Williams November 22, 2023
2 Informational Interview I am attending the University of Maryland Global Campus to achieve a Bachelors of Science in Marketing. I chose to interview Kira Walters; she is very knowledgeable and successful in her career in marketing. I learned that there are different paths that you can take to get into a marketing career and that it is very rewarding. Kira Walters is the Manager, Marketing Communications of the Memorialization Division for Matthews International. She has worked there for 15 years. She graduated college with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, which the courses were a mix of journalism and public relations. Kira had her internship with Del Monte Foods Consumer Promotions department. This led to her career in marketing communications. Kira stumbled upon this career accidentally with her first internship, she remained in marketing because she likes the challenge of creating and bringing the ideas and concepts to life, which she feels is the most rewarding part of the job. The traits that are most important to have to be successful in the marketing field is to be resourceful, creative, a strong communicator, leader, learner and interested in seeing knowledge and disciplined. There were 3 vitals steps that Kira mentioned to prepare for a career in marketing they are; Marketing knowledge, strong writing skills, and project management skills. Marketing knowledge is understanding the basic and to stay on top of new and emerging trends. Writing knowledge being a strong writer, content creation across a wide variety of marketing execution. Lastly project management skills, at any given time there are many different projects and task happening, you have to understand how to manage and prioritize. From interviewing Kira Walters, I have found that the career path you want and get a degree in isn’t always what ends up happening, that you may accidently fall into a career you love by the way of an internship and experience. The marketing career can be very rewarding and takes a lot of creativity and collaboration with team members.
