COU 630 9-1 Ethical Considerations Southern New Hampshire University
In this semester of learning and understanding career counseling theory and practice and working
and practicing these skills with our peers there were many ethical considerations. Frist and
foremost as mental health counselors and career counselors in general our primary responsibility is respectful of our clients and their wellbeing. This is represented in the ACA code of ethics 2014 as code A. 1. a client welfare primary responsibility as well in the NCDA where it is the same code. When working with Eza as my client one of my concerns in everything we collaborated on is that she felt safe and understood. This process required us both to be vulnerable to each other, so I wanted to make sure she felt safe enough to open up. The next part of that is informed consent which also has the same codes in the ACA and codes of ethics which would be A.2. a informed consent in this part as this is a learning process, we both knew how this process would work for us however something that I noticed that I was constantly doing throughout this process was checking and rechecking that I really understood what she was telling me about her work experience about what she went through it was important for me to really get it in her words and make sure that I wasn't misunderstanding the information. The next
ethical consideration would be working within our bounds of what we are proficiently knowledgeable of which would be ACA code C.2.a boundaries of competence “Counselors practice only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience” (

Nondiscrimination Counselors do not condone or engage in discrimination against prospective or current clients, students, employees, supervisees, or research participants based on age, culture, disability, ethnicity, race, religion/spirituality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital/ partnership status, language preference, socioeconomic status, immigration status, or any basis proscribed by law" (

me was part of promoting the wellbeing and of the safety of my client considering our differences in cultural and religion and understanding what her and being aware of norms were for her. ACA code “ A.4.a. Avoiding Harm Counselors act to avoid harming their clients, trainees, and research participants and to minimize or to remedy unavoidable or unanticipated harm” was also another big one for me because Eza had shared some personal potentially triggering experience she had had that affect her career journey so I was mindful though out the process that she felt safe and (

was willing to talk about her experiences only the ones she wanted to and also in writing the report that she felt safe and understood . From the NCDA codes I Considered were around the assessment “E.7.a. Administration Conditions Career professionals administer assessments under
the same conditions that were established in their standardization. When assessments are not administered under standard conditions, as may be necessary to accommodate clients with disabilities, or when unusual behavior or irregularities occur during the administration, those conditions are noted in interpretation, and the results may be designated as invalid or of questionable validity” and “E.9.a. Reporting When career professionals report assessment results, they consider the client’s personal and cultural background, the level of the client’s understanding of the results, and the impact of the results on the client. In reporting assessment results, career professionals indicate reservations that exist regarding validity or reliability due to
circumstances of the assessment or the inappropriateness of the norms for the person tested” (NCDA, 2015). It was important to understand the reliability and validity of these before providing them to the client.
Things that I will do to ensure that I am making ethical choices are understanding the clients background by doing research and asking questions. as well as reaching out to an advisor when I

am unsure of protocol. Finally, just checking in with the client and seeing if they feel heard and understood or answering any questions and accommodating them in feeling safe and heard.
