Stansbury 1 Grant Stansbury LHRD 3723 Feb 17 2023 1. Based on the Model of Primary Leadership Skills (Figure 6.1), how would you describe Caroline’s skills? In what skills is she strongest, and in what skills is she weakest? Although Caroline has strong technical skills, she struggles to manage tasks and people well. She has poor administrative skills, misdirects her staff, underutilizes resources, and has trouble with planning and scheduling. She also has trouble understanding client requirements and the client base. She excels in technical knowledge and staff empathy, though. She is aware of her goals and the overall tasks she must complete, but she is unsure of how to do so. 2. Sweet Caroline’s bakery and restaurant seemed to emerge out of nowhere. What role did Caroline play in this? Do you think Caroline could improve her business with more strategic planning? Due to her prior success, Caroline was driven to grow her company, but she lacked a plan for doing so. She was a technical expert, but she lacked other leadership qualities like managing her team well, giving clear instructions, obtaining administrative authority, and making use of the latest technology. More strategic planning could be used to improve these areas. 3. Have you ever worked at a place that was very successful but felt quite chaotic and disorganized? How did you handle it? I’ve never worked in a place that was successful but felt very chaotic. 4. If you were a consultant to Caroline, would you recommend she open a second location? If so, what three specific skills would you have Caroline develop in order to help manage
Stansbury 2 her business better? As a consultant, I strongly advise Caroline to compile a list of the things she learned from her first location assignment before taking over the second location. Sort all of her tasks according to the four main categories of people, process, performance, and stakeholders. She will be able to categorize the issues using this sort of classification, and she should hone her administrative abilities to appoint supervisors who can manage these levers in a methodical way. She needs to venture outside of her comfort zone and stop making cakes.
