Topic Evaluation 7 Question 1 : what are the industrial model and salaried model of HRM? (20%) The industrial HRM model works towards a factory-based system of manufacturing, this means more machine usage and lower skilled labour typically used in 3 rd world countries to negate labour cost. More often than not, the industrial model’s decision-making process places importance on lower responsibility, scope and discretion, which promotes power towards management forming a subservient dynamic within the culture. Whereas the salary model promotes a higher level of power/pay/advantages towards those in higher levels of an organisation. This focuses on individual/group success in given areas to ensure each level is targeted towards the correct specific role. Training in the salary model is promoted to ensure employees continue to climb to higher performance levels and create a higher level of effectiveness within the organisation, the performance is typically tracked via management. Question 2 : What are the high-involvement work systems? What aspects did the group explain most clearly and correctly? What important elements, if any, did the group not explain clearly or correctly? a) Explain the high-involvement work systems (30%) High-involvement work systems focuses on employee’s involvement within human resource management, work becomes more flexible regarding decision making ability and their overall contribution within the company. In addition to this employees’ have an increased level of say (voice) within the company, pay incentives are used and training and development are focused to ensure employees improve upon current skills and abilities. b) Aspects that were well explained (10%): - HIWS explained to a great extent with good use of resources to engage audience, this was expressed with the use of a case study too.
- A variety of models were expressed in detail to ensure audience was engaged and information was provided in relation to lecture content c) Aspects that could be explained better (10%): - HIWS was not explained in terms of a low skilled warehouse setting as was done so in the readings. This would have cleared up confusion regarding aspects of the industrial model too. - This is not an aspect however, there was low engagement regarding the remainder of the presentation. d) Reflecting on case 8- Mr Cedric takes his leave and figure 8.1, can you recommend HRM practices that promote employees’ power, information, reward and knowledge (PIRK) (30%)? Promoting employees’ power, information, reward and knowledge in capital intensive and high-tech industry’s is in theory expected to return benefits in higher employee satisfaction and performance. The new firm taking over Mr Cedric’s warehouse are looking to bring in the latest production technology. The main HRM practices that promote employment power, information, reward, and knowledge based on figure 8.1 and the case study include: enabling employees to have flexibility through the ability to taste test food to ensure that the product is how it is supposed to be as variability is bound to occur. Intrinsic motivation within the workplace is also important which can be supported through delivery process being taken out be employees, this includes purpose of activities, delivery times and why particular activities occur within the workplace. Due to employee motivation being a main issue importance is placed on how that can be changed, schemes regarding motivation surrounding incentives are extremely important for this. Finally, knowledge for employees will be provided through training, which can be done through machinery training, communication skills, policies and general practices within the workplace that needs to be improved. Overall, the workplace will be more efficient and effective with a higher level of motivation both intrinsically and extrinsically. Not only will
performance increase but the employees will have a higher job satisfaction being in an industrial can make this difficult at times.
