1 Curriculum Proposal Analysis Jennifer Koerte University of Phoenix Cur/506 Linda Florence September 25, 2023
2 Introduction In his TED talk titled "Let's Use Videos to Reinvent Education," Salman Khan presents a radical idea for transforming education that originated from his instructional videos on YouTube. This paper will provide a summary of Khan's definition of curriculum, analyze the underlying curricular theory and the era of curriculum development, and explore the plausibility of implementing this transformative change. Salam Khan’s Definition of Curriculum Salman Khan the founder of Khan Academy has a vision for education and curriculum that is radically different. The idea essentially supports the “flipped classroom” where teachers assign video lectures, and digital problem sets as homework, and traditional “homework becomes classroom work. This idea is that students encounter the content before class then during the school day, teachers can interact with students based on their individual needs and higher-level thinking skills. One way Khan describes this method is by humanizing the classroom. Theory and Educational Era Aligned With This Change This idea of a flipped classroom aligns with many attributes of the Modern Conservative developments. The flipped classroom offers students the ability to work at their own pace and master the content, and teachers to give individualized attention aligning with the work leaders of this era did with differentiated instruction. The Modern Conservative Era’s government involvement No Child Left Behind Act was intended to make sure that every student received high-quality education and mastery of standards. In a traditional model all students are learning at the same pace (khan 2011) makes a point about learning to ride a bike and how we would not
3 take a kid who couldn’t make a left turn on a bicycle but scored 80% and move him onto a unicycle. The flipped classroom could help make sure that students do not have gaps in their understanding of standards before being pushed on to the next level of material. The flipped classroom also can be aligned with the big ideas of Modern Conservatism in 21st-century skills, and global education. This new approach uses technology in a way that allows students to interact on a global platform and teaches them how to have critical thinking and self- determination. This proposal also aligns with the views of a holistic teacher who wants to arrange the environment to elicit student response and value orientated theorist who wants to liberate students. My Position In relation to this week's reading according to (Glatthorn et al., 2019, Chapter 4) the holistic teacher wants educational experiences that are expansive and substantive. I think Khan’s idea of using video to reinvent education has a great amount of potential. This approach seems to be very substantial and expansive. Imagining a classroom where my students come to class having already accessed the content and are ready for deeper learning and dialogue sounds amazing. This also aligns with views of value-orientated theories according to (Glatthorn et al., 2019, Chapter 4) these theorists want to liberate students and consider what inhibitions they might face. The possibility of meeting each student with where they are whether they need extra support or more enrichment would be powerful.

4 Benefits and Non-Benefits of Proposed Curriculum Major benefits for students are that they can pause and re-watch videos without feeling like they're wasting your time allowing them to move at their own pace. Students have a completely individualized learning experience. School benefits from technology that allows self-paced differentiated classrooms. When students have already experienced the “lecture” at home teachers can humanize the classrooms making them a place where instead of just sitting and listening to lectures they can have meaningful discussions and interactions with teachers and other students. Teachers are equipped with data from having access to exactly what each student is working on. Families and parents can be enabled to help students even when they don’t understand the content themselves. Parents often feel they can not help students with homework because they don’t know how to do it, but if they can access the content and lectures together parents can be empowered to help students succeed. The benefits of this type of curriculum can offer many benefits to the community. Khan in his TED talk asks us to imagine an adult who is embarrassed to go back to school, and a kid in a low economic family who quits school to help his family, they can remediate or have a couple of hours of school and receive peer tutoring without any embarrassment (Khan, 2011) From a plausibility standard, I realize this concept has challenges such as every student having, devices, and more work for students outside of the class. This means teachers would need to make sure that students and families understand how this work frees up class time for meaningful deep learning. .
