Resources for Reaching Learners in a Behavior Academic Classroom (BAC) Jennifer Koerte University of Phoenix Cur/520 Kimberly Testa July 11, 2023
Introduction According to (Cooper & Garner, 2012) There are times when students just don't fit into the conventional school setting, and the remedy for this is to make the primary focus on improving learning instead of removing the problem or making it less visible. This presentation is meant to highlight the resources in a behavior alternative class setting to help students improve learning and academics. 02/17/2024 2

Diversity of Learners This self-contained behavior classroom services students from grades 1-3. Most are well below grade level, but some are close or on grade level, very few are ever above grade level on any subject . Students are diverse in many ways including race, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and gender. All learners are on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which means they are classified under a disability. Some of the behavior disorders vary from oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Is there anything you would suggest for additional resources that the school might offer to assist the teachers in reaching all learners in their classrooms or setting? I think pushing into the mainstream classroom is an extremely beneficial thing for students in a self-contained classroom. Often there is not much support from mainstream classroom teachers or support for them either. Administration and districts should make this more of a priority and help support SPED teachers with the time, methods, personnel, and training of mainstream teachers. Inclusion matters! ~Alyson Lantz 02/17/2024 9
