Renee Peavy Student ID: D009915833 D082 PA TASK 2 Emotional and Cultural Intelligence A. Personal Values My top four core values include integrity, honesty, accountability, and consistency. I believe that all four of these are imperative to possess as an individual based on my experiences thus far in life. Integrity takes priority as this means the individual is morally sound and follows society’s typical ethical principles, doing right from wrong. This attribute is the most important to me because when faced with dilemmas or conflicts, I have realized that no matter the outcome it has always felt better to do the right thing than what is deemed wrong. Guilt ensues rapidly after doing something wrong. Moving on with honesty, I feel goes hand in hand with integrity. Telling the truth despite how it may affect someone or something else, is always necessary. As telling one lie will always result in a second, or a third, snowballing further until a catastrophe occurs. Now, the last two core values of mine also work well when coupled, accountability and consistency. I choose accountability as a core value because I believe that relationships are fundamental for one’s growth, no matter if personal or professional. I want to know that the relationships I have chosen in life possess a mutual reciprocation between myself and the other party that they know I have their back and they can count on me and vice versa. A bigger aspect of accountability is owning up to one’s actions good or bad. I tie consistency in with this because I believe that each person shall be treated equally not only when convenient but every time. Each relationship will have its personal dynamic and circumstance however each person shall receive the same effort from me as I do my other relationships. Another supporting value in terms of consistency is being always kind despite how outside circumstances are influencing me. I would like my peers to know when do something I put my best foot forward and try to consistently show up for not only others but most importantly myself. I like to hold myself to a standard of being the best version of myself I possibly cannot just on the easy days but on the harder days as well. In retrospect, while other core values are worth possessing, I believe that these are my top four core values. B. Compare, Values 1. Integrity: When looking at my four chosen values in terms of Alliah's company I can see integrity being demonstrated. Taking note of their ethics statement, “Alliah will do the right thing for all stakeholders involved.” With this in mind, we see her wanting to do the right thing and holding herself to a standard of doing right by those involved. Alliah is demonstrating how to do right by others even when it might be hard. For example, if the company needed more work from Alliah because all stakeholders would benefit, she is willing to do so. In terms of their Corporate Social Responsibility statement, they claim to be, “Committed to reducing their environmental impact.” I feel like this shows they are willing to uphold their morals even if it cost the company more finically because doing right for the good of the stakeholders is their mission.
Renee Peavy Student ID: D009915833 D082 PA TASK 2 2. Honesty: This once again is shown in their ethics statement to “do the right thing for all stakeholders.” By releasing this statement, they say they will go be honest and upfront, beneficial to the company or not. They are putting honesty above their public image as a business. On the contrary, the social responsibility statement could use a little more captivation on honesty. If the company would include its current environmental impact, this would help with transparency. With transparency comes honesty and sets the ground for a good fundamental future, especially for all stakeholders involved. 3. Accountability: The whole basis of the company aligns with accountability. There is a standard to which the company values to uphold themselves. Beyond the whole of the company, Alliah personally states how she will hold herself accountable not only in her word but in her actions of fairness as well. This idea is demonstrated through her ethics statement as well as the company’s statement on reducing the company’s environmental impact. I once again feel as if greater accountability could benefit from transparency to hold themselves accountable for their current environmental footprint. 4. Consistency. Lastly, consistency this one makes the effort to align with the ethics statement stating they will do right by the stakeholders. However, this one could use more direction to truly align. The company doesn’t include any words to refer to how often in the mission statement. They could have used working such al always or every time. If the company had considered including follow-ups on progress or anything, the audience would have been able to see how consistent the company is being with its actions. This ties into the social responsibility statement in the sense of a specific goal or form of measurement. Consistency must be measured and without mention of this progress or a destination goal this value is hard to measure, we are shown the intentions but need to see more from the reported effort standpoint. C1. Explanation of Improvements 1. With diversification in progress, in terms of groups of stakeholders, improvements will follow. With a wider spectrum of stakeholders at hand for the company, Alliah will be able to grow significantly in terms of cultural intelligence. Her sense of work techniques will also become more profound. With more people comes a larger plethora of perspectives. This is not only true for those working inside the company but those affiliated as well. Supplies, Contractors, and all other entities affected by this diversification, causing them to think of a different level. With this out-of-the-box thinking the company’s horizons in innovation and creativity will broaden. 2. Allah’s Sensitivity and cultural intelligence will mature from partnering with a more diverse group of stakeholders. Allah’s sense of leadership will grow and become more efficacious. This response will result in a decrease in resistance from current employees. Staff will notice the company’s ability to adapt to cultural differences. With this, the morale of the whole team will skyrocket leading to a lower turnover rate. With a lower turnover, the company will save money as well, making for a more efficient/ less stressful work environment.
Renee Peavy Student ID: D009915833 D082 PA TASK 2 C2. Potential Challenges 1. Communication is arguably the most important aspect of problem-solving. This is applicable in terms of Alliah’s diversification process. With the company reaching out and doing business at a more diverse level than before communication is not only important but also will inevitably be affected. With the company working with various stakeholders, a language barrier is likely to come into play. Specifically, in terms of training. During the training process, a lot of conversation and verbal command takes place. With a language barrier present the company needs to make translators or some way of communication feasible. Along with access to language barrier assistance, management should have a way to communicate with the staff to ensure effective communication is always happening. With this accommodation in place, the team will be able to overcome the language barriers present in many work environments but especially Alliah’s. C3. Hofstede and Communication 1. Individual versus Collectivism. As the company begins to work with a more diverse culture, new issues can arise, making the new waters difficult to navigate. By trying Hofstede’s dimensions, individual vs. collectivism, the leadership team may grow in terms of communication. The leaders will need to find out from the members if they completely view their position as a collective group or individually. With research in hand, the leaders will then be able to adjust and revise their communication techniques. Resulting in the way the employees perform. For example, if all Allah’s leadership members treat and reward fellow employees on a more individual basis, those with a more collectivism type view may not understand why this approach is taken. Culturally speaking, some are more group-oriented than others. An employee with this type of background may be fonder of collectivism in the work environment than the said individual approach. Leaders taking the time to figure out the communication style is pertinent to the communication of the company. With strong communication, leaders will be able to set strong expectations for the goals of the employees and the company.
