ROLE PLAY APPLIED MEDIATION SKILLS/CONFLICT RESOLUTION Submitted By: RITIKA SUYAL (A00104704) HARPREET KAUR (A00118473) GURPAL SINGH (A00120478) 1. What was the issue? Ans: The issue in this scenario was that one of the employee whose name is Chuck, listens to music on his computer with headphones on. However, Chuck often ends up sleeping and 1
snoring at work, which disturbs his coworkers. His coworkers find it difficult to concentrate on their because of all this. This case is all about how should Chuck's coworkers handle the situation? 2. Who were the parties involved? Ans: The parties in this scenario were actually the two parties and the conflict is interpersonal, both the parties are employees (Chuck on one side and other two Lisa and Anna on the other side), both parties work in the same organization and same department. They sorted out the issue on their own without approaching to the HR first and in the end they will approach the HR for a permanent solution of this problem. 3. What discussion was done? Ans: Both the parties discussed the issue nicely. They held a meeting to discuss the issue in which they three were involved. The following discussion was done: Lisa: Hey, Chuck! Have you got some time? Chuck : yes, sure! Have seat girls. Lisa : Well, sorry to say. It will seem awkward to you, but actually it was quite important to discuss and thank you for your time. Anna: So, we want to talk about something that is not allowed at our workplace. Not only it is prohibited, but it creates problems for others too. Chuck: sorry, but I didn’t get that actually. Can you be more specific? Lisa: Actually, the thing is that you listen to music with earphones on and sometimes you end up sleeping and snoring 2
loudly. As our work demands considerable attention and concentration .It gets difficult for us to concentrate on our work due to that. Apart from that, it is also considered as gross misconduct and grounds for a disciplinary action as well. Chuck: sorry for the problem that you all are facing. Actually, I am working on a very important project that the management has assigned me. I am regularly working late in the night. Also, sometimes I have to start early in the morning before you all come to office. This leaves almost no time for me to take rest. I am not getting enough sleep. I put my earphones on sometimes because it keeps me awake. But you know sometimes situation goes out of hand and I fall asleep. Anna : oh, I see so this is the case. We were not aware of this. You could have come talk to us. Maybe we could have helped you out in completing the project. You are not getting enough sleep this is not good for your health. Lisa: yes, I think she is right, we will try our best to help you. We were also confused and we all know that you are a responsible worker, why’s so happening. We just wanted to ascertain the reason. Whether you are facing any stress or anxiety because of which you couldn’t take complete sleep? We are aware that you are not like habitual to this. We have seen all this happening since last week. After all, it will affect your performance. Isn’t it? How will you meet your deadlines? Chuck: Yeah, I am aware that I am compromising my health and relationships as well. Sometimes I just think I am fed up of it. I just can’t afford to take more workload. It’s going to kill me and my personal relationships, I guess I need to think about this plus I am going to take management permission about this. I hope they will understand. Anna: of course, they will. I mean you cannot risk your life. Lisa: I think we should also go with him and talk to them. Anna : yes, you are right! 3

Lisa: okay, so this evening we will go to the HR and get their permission. As soon as they say yes, we will start working on the project altogether. Chuck : sounds cool. I am glad you both came and offered me helping hand. Thanks a lot for understanding my problem. Lisa: no worries Anna: ok, we will meet in the evening. 4. What resolution / conclusion came out as part of the discussion? Ans: Both the parties listened to each other side carefully and with patience. The employee Chuck on one side against who the conflict occurred, was actually facing stress due to over workload. That’s why he actually feels lethargic at workplace and end up sleeping there. His problem was discussed in detail between both the parties. Lisa and Anna asked about the reason for this and chuck explained his situation and they understand it very well and they agreed to help Chuck with that by cooperating him in the project work. CONFLICT RESOLUTION: Win/Win It was a win-win situation for both, because both the parties win, there is no loser. Everyone is accommodated and all the participants of the conflict come out winning. A mutual communication sorted out all the issue. And a deeper understanding of Chuck’s situation was needed to sort it out and to reach to a conclusion. The resolution made was that Lisa and Anna will help Chuck in his project work. And after that Chuck will meet the HR manager because his health and person relationship both are suffering because of workload pressure. He needs some time to relax himself and to perform his personal responsibilities. 4
