Introduction to Agile 1 BIT-415 IT Project Management Introduction to Agile
Introduction to Agile 2 Part 1 A lean business reduces the waste created by traditional business cases and helps optimize the value of the project. Once a company recognizes and eliminates waste they can see an increase in “efficiency, improved quality, time effectiveness and productivity” (Rais Siddiqui, 2021). With a lean business case teams and organizations can reach their objectives easier and benefit them long term. Some benefits along with less waste include being able to focus more on activities the company sees as important, providing a higher quality item for the customer by focusing on these tasks, and gives the team extra time to create presentations or additional training. A traditional business case on the other hand contains very detailed information about the company, where it is right now in the market, and what type of growth the company is expecting to see in the future. The traditional business case is usually 50-60 pages long and can take several weeks or months to write out, however it is easier to get stakeholders and investors to finance a project with a traditional business case. This is because banks and other financial institutions are more attached to a traditional business plan since they can see how organized you happen to be so they can more accurately gauge their lending risks (Gaille, 2016). Lean business cases are most beneficial with new hires to not overwhelm them with too much information about the company. A company may have both a traditional business case for investors, stakeholders and experienced employees and a lean business case for new staff as part of the hiring process. Since a lean business case only details the most important parts of the organization it can be used when working on less complex assignments or with inexperienced staff. A traditional business case has many sections that include at a minimum: an executive summary, business description, concept, and strategy, industry analysis, market analysis, organizational and management section, financial projections, financing requests (U.S. Small Business Administration, 2023). There is usually an appendix that includes industry studies, letters of incorporation, trademark registrations, and partnership agreements. If the project requires funding by a bank or other financial institution it is important to have a traditional business case. Part 2: The Agile Manifesto lists four key ideals and 12 principles that should be followed by project managers and the software development team to guide their work. Each team has their own methodologies that differ from other teams and everyone agrees to follow. Agile is defined as how a person adapts to and responds to change. The reasoning behind the creation of agile manifesto was software developers wanted to combine new and old ways of development. A part of this was to create rules/policies but also to get the teams to collaborate effectively. The two principle that I chose are as follows: 5. Build projects around motivated individuals. Give them the environment and support they need and trust them to get the job done. The reasoning behind choosing this principle is that unmotivated individuals could stop working when stressed or upset and slower overall. It would require extra time and effort for the whole team in trying to find out what motivates this individual which could cause the project to not meet its time goal.
Introduction to Agile 3 12. At regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly. This week we learned that it is extremely important to have retrospective meetings. These meetings help a team focus on what went well or wrong in the previous iteration and develop ideas that can help them in future iterations. Even if the retrospective meeting is not needed, the buffer time can be used for planning, taking a few minute mental break, grabbing food and/or a beverage, meditating or simply getting away from the desk. Part 3: To differentiate agile and the waterfall methods we need to understand each one first. The waterfall method requires the software development team to complete the full phase entirely before they can move on to the next part of development or testing (DeClute, 2022). It is called the waterfall method because the workflow goes from top to bottom like the flow of a waterfall. In agile methodology both development and testing are performed simultaneously or in order through continued iterations. This method offers communication and collaboration between all team members involved in the project including clients, programmers, supervisors, and testers. Waterfall and Agile Method Key Differences The main difference between the two methods is in the adaptability to change. Agile is more adaptable to new requirements and changes whereas the Waterfall method or approach relies on having supporting documentation written in detail. “The waterfall method asserts that customer feedback and stakeholder interactions need not occur until the end-product is delivered (DeClute, 2022).” The agile method understands that certain requirements can change even before production starts and is more flexible to changes. Examples of each If an organization has less interaction with stakeholders and customers or the interaction can wait until the project is complete the waterfall approach would be more beneficial. Some products may be developed more easily without customer involvement. If the organization wants a higher quality item that is more user-friendly they could take the agile method approach. The agile method allows for more customer interaction which helps the development team provide the higher quality product they seek. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. It is up to the organization to decide which method will allow them to reach the goal of delivering the quality product to the consumer while reaching the set time and budget goals and leaving the stakeholders and consumers satisfied.
