INTRODUCTION
For this assignment, I took a self-assessment: “
Skills for Developing Yourself as a
Leader.
" The assessment gave me insight into the various leadership skills that determine your
ability to lead. Leadership characteristics include implementing strategic goals, aligning
individual and collective goals, and refreshing a company. According to Hughes, Ginnett, and
Curphy (2022), Knowing their strengths and shortcomings helps everyone learn leadership. To
achieve a goal, a leader uses his talents and relies on others to improve upon their weaknesses.
The self-assessment revealed my talents and limitations. This study made me think about how to
use these skills to lead better. I will explain my strengths and weaknesses after my self-
assessment. I will describe my successes and failures due to my strengths and weaknesses. After
this task, I would maximize my strengths and minimize my weaknesses.
REVEALING INFORMATION IN THE TEST RESULTS
The McGraw-Hill CONNECT Platform has a self-assessment test called "Skills for
Developing Yourself as a Leader," which I went through to identify my leadership potential or
qualities. It's a simple test about what I feel about myself and how I generally react to some
particular situation (Rosen & Jerdee, 1977). If we talk about the test result, after 20
questionnaires based on 7 leadership qualities answered, my score is 75 out of 100. It shows I
have a strong leadership quality within me. So, the question arises: What is the determinant
factor by which we understand whether the person has leadership traits? The 20 question was
about my honesty, work priority, time management skill, problem-solving skill, work-life
balance, communication skill, responsibility, confidence level, team management skill,
appreciation skill, etc. However, not all factors I scored highest but most of them

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF MY PERSONALITY AS PER SELF-
ASSESSMENT
After looking over the results of the assessment, one of my goals is to concentrate on
bettering myself so that I may capitalize on my strengths while simultaneously minimizing the
impact of my deficiencies. My strategy for achieving leadership success is to become a master of
people. For my business to be successful, I require a crew that is exceptionally skilled. As a
leader, one of my primary goals is to improve the quality of life for those who follow me. I
always made the right decision, even when faced with challenging circumstances (
Cadwell,
2004)
. I want to inspire my pupils to work together toward the achievement of a goal that will be
beneficial to the entire class. The AOR model should be followed by leaders when acting,
observing, and reflecting on the decisions that they have made, according to Hughes et al.
(2021). The vast majority of leaders have a plan laid out to achieve a goal, which makes putting
that plan into motion a lot simpler. According to the CMOE Team's research from 2021, the vast
majority of leaders lack the ability to observe and reflect. It is essential for leaders to keep track
of how the activities they undertake effect the objectives. People that aspire to be leaders are
reflective and always looking for ways to improve themselves. In light of what has been said up
until this point, the following is an analysis of my various strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths:
1.
I am highly receptive to others. When someone brings their perspective, I would be open-
minded and consider their suggestions.
2.
I consider myself to be highly reliable. If I have committed to a task, I will ensure that I
can complete it before the deadline.

3.
I am altruistic in nature. I like to help others so they can have a positive change in their
life, and I motivate them to become their best version.
Weaknesses:
1.
I am overly idealistic at times. Since I was raised in a military household, I believe
everyone should share similar principles as mine when it comes to right and wrong. This
is only true, sometimes and I need to work on it.
2.
I can be too imposing on others when it comes to improvement. This may cause me to
unknowingly force others to try and change even when they do not want to. I need to
realize that not everyone likes so much intrusion from others (McGraw Hill, 2022).
3.
I can be overly empathetic at times. I go out of my way, at times, to support others. In
some situations, this can be mentally exhausting, as I will consider their problems my
own.
Further Capitalization on strengths and Compensate for Weaknesses in Future
I need to work on improving all of my strengths, but I do not want to fight against all of
my flaws because those are my genuine emotions, which originate from my soul, and I cannot
control those feelings to a hundred percent. "When we focus on developing our strengths, rather
than trying to improve our weaknesses, we grow faster than when we are trying to improve our
weaknesses."
Capitalizing Strengths
Real-world role models can help me learn how they became leaders. Read more
leadership tales, articles, and studies to improve my understanding. I can also take a leadership
course to improve. Volunteer leadership chances are great for on-site experience. Accept
leadership possibilities in daily life.

Compensating Weakness
To overcome my weaknesses, I must have healthy compassion and influence fairly.
Leadership that shows compassion while making tough decisions creates a culture where people
feel protected, respected, and capable of outstanding work (Tony, 2020). In discussion forums, I
must give reasonable explanations because my extensive explanations may overwhelm or bore
people.
Personality traits and Leadership style
According to Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy (2022), a leader's personality, intelligence,
and emotional intelligence assist a group in achieving its goals. Although personality has several
meanings, we use it to explain actions. Research demonstrates that leadership style and the Five-
Factor or OCEAN Model of Personality are complementary. The Big Five test measures
Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. My Big Five
personality test scores showed moderate to high conscientiousness and agreeableness. My high
conscientiousness indicates organization and discipline. My high agreeableness implies I put
people first and cooperate rather than compete. I care about others and enjoy assisting. Leaders
must express their vision and build trust with followers (Luthra & Dahiya, 2015). Empathy and
trust are my goals with personnel. Minimal extraversion and modest receptivity to experience.
My lowest Neuroticism score means I can handle negative emotions and react less to fear, fury,
and grief. My leadership style is transformative because I emphasize teamwork and helping
others succeed. I am open to leadership challenges to achieve organizational goals because I
focus on change and improvement (Hughes et al., 2022). A study indicated that women

executives can adapt to multiple approaches based on the situation or business objectives. Their
emotional connection makes them more adaptable and attentive to others.

ACTION PLANS TO IMPROVE INTERACTIVE LEADERSHIP
After examining my leadership style's skills, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, it is
time to develop a plan to improve my leadership skills and qualities. A leadership development
plan assists us in defining a roadmap of skill-learning activities we will engage in over a certain
period to develop ourselves as better leaders. Learning new skills entails taking chances and
pushing ourselves outside our comfort zones (Hughes et al., 2022). A well-written growth plan is
necessary for actual transformation, and any progress should be appropriately documented to
maintain motivation. In my case, I have created the following ten-step plan to improve my
leadership skills:
Obtain MBA Degree:
I have enrolled in the MBA program to develop my leadership
capabilities and skills. This degree will help me improve my weaker areas of communication by
learning to manage and cooperate with teams and developing my interpersonal skills. During this
course, I will have the chance to meet different people from different backgrounds with whom I
can interact for team projects (Leatherman, 2008). I must take advantage of this opportunity to
collaborate closely with my teammates on projects and in class to build interpersonal skills that
will serve me well after graduation.
Practice Two–way communication:
While I will be a team leader, I must first hear team
members' ideas and feedback before making a choice. After active listening, collaborate with
team members ideas. I must justify my differing perspectives on any topic for each team
member. A team can be effective in the organization with adequate cooperation.
MGMT 601

Focus on Learning and development:
Once I become the leader, that does not mean I
know everything, and my learning phase is over. To develop all kinds of skills, I can take training
from leadership experts, need to take feedback and opinions from my mentor and superiors, and
if necessary and applicable to the case, I can attend different workshops and seminars to develop
my leadership skills to the fullest.
Delegation of work and making a future leader:
After becoming a leader, I need to
think about the organizational future. I will encourage my team members to be proactive with
any innovative ideas. Sometimes we need to delegate some tasks to the future generation or new
employees of the team to make them feel more empowered and confident. This is the beginning
of their future, and within this new generation, one day, corporations will find new leaders who
will run the corporation.
3.
THE BEST WAY TO COMMUNICATE
According to Luthra and Dahiya (2015), As a leader, I must learn the best technique to
communicate so that my team and others can receive the information without misinterpretation.
The most excellent communication technique depends on the person, team, and culture.
Communication can be professional or informal. Professionally, we value formal
communication, but casual contact may be appropriate. We can contact you via mail, email,
video conferencing, and in-person meetings. These are simple communication methods, but a
leader must follow basic standards to communicate with the team. Those are:
o
Listening to others
o
Give attention and empathize with the issue before jumping on any solution
o
Maintaining proper body language so that others do not feel offended
MGMT 601

o
While communicating, you need to be honest. There's no need to try to be great.
We must remember that communication is an interaction between two or more people, so
it is essential to understand the other person's needs and feelings. Before advising the other
person, one must ask questions, clarify confusion, understand the situation, and let the other
person say what he wants. Active listening is one of the best ways of communication
(Oakes,2021).
4.
PROFESSIONAL ROLE SUITES MY LEADERSHIP QUALITY
A career you love leads to success. If a person's job does not promote particular qualities,
they fade. I had skillful communication, time management, and problem-solving as a student. As
a student, I developed these skills while working on projects with diverse teams. I majored in
marketing because I like it. One professor’s active teaching style made me love service
marketing. Service marketing, especially customer service, followed. I choose my career alone.
Retail banking internships involve client interaction (Parker, 2020). Avery Dennison, a
multinational, hired me after I graduated. In 7 years in customer service, I received increases and
prizes for excellent service.
My previous job needed me to speak to foreigners and locals. My timeframes and tasks
varied. My team and I exceeded expectations in creative initiatives. My marketing career began
in Bangladesh and will continue in Canada. I am a part-time retail customer care rep. My skills
and attributes match my Canadian work. Since I like my client-service job, I will keep careers
the same today (Chastney, 2021).

Many researchers introduced so many leadership styles and models. Among them,
popular styles are Democratic, Transactional, Charismatic, Autocratic, Transformational
leadership, etc. My leadership style or how I want to lead my team is most likely suited to
"Interactive leadership." Interactive leadership mainly focuses on participation, a feeling of
empowerment among team members, and excites them about work (Nayar, 2021). Although it
looks like participative leadership, it's far beyond that concept.
6.
IMPORTANCE OF SELF-ASSESSMENT ANALYSIS
As Per our instructor's advice, the survey we completed is a handy tool to identify our
leadership qualities. We have done everything that was questioned in the assessment, but some
points we should have noticed that we have. However, one new piece of information about
myself I learned from the assessment is work-life balance. In my life, I am a service holder, a
student, and a mother of a 3-year-old child. I am going through an intense time in these three
roles; still, I am balancing my professional, personal, and student life. So, it's a known truth, but I
never realized it before doing the self-assessment, and after doing it, I am identifying my skills
and qualities in a different way than I generally do in my day-to-day life. The self-assessment
questions are easy to answer, and the report also says what the range of scores means with real-
life examples (McGraw Hill, 2020). So, we can easily relate to our professional and personal life
also.
7.
BUILDING FUTURE CAREER PATH
Although I know my strengths and weaknesses in my leadership qualities, I will have to
nurture these qualities to make an excellent career in Canada because My home country's culture
MGMT 601
11
is very different from Canadian culture. Leadership qualities vary from culture to culture in some
particular cases (Stobierski, 2019). However, I have already decided to make a career in the
marketing sector, whether in the Retail sector or the Client service sector. Once I complete my
MBA from UCW, I will start applying for full-time jobs, and once I get the opportunity to serve
any Canadian corporation, my Career will start to grow. As I now work part–time in the retail
sector, this experience will also help make my future Career smoother (Wright, 2021). Also, I
will apply my leadership qualities wherever they apply and try to mitigate my weaknesses.
CONCLUSION
A successful leader can influence others and guide them toward a common goal. It is
critical to cultivate leadership qualities to transform our lives. However, building leadership
skills frequently focuses on weaknesses, but it is equally important to improve our strengths.
Knowing the weaker areas allows us to identify improvement areas, but understanding the
strengths, skills, and abilities allows us to utilize them productively. In my situation, I may use
my leadership qualities of personal stability, work quality, self-management, agreeableness, and
conscientiousness to develop my weaker areas. For example, my agreeableness qualities may be
used to be friendly and cooperative with people, which will assist in improving my interpersonal
and communication abilities. I can also utilize my self-management skills to draw a line between
my personal and professional lives. My high conscientiousness score will motivate me in my
leadership skill development action plans. The business world is diversified, and more females
are occupying leadership positions. If I can improve my interpersonal skills and develop practical
communication skills, I can change my leadership style into a big success.
