Discussion 1.2 Wk 1 LDR/711A Analyze components of the SPL model . Summarize your understanding of how the model will benefit you as a doctoral student. To succeed in a doctoral dissertation, students must have self-discipline, be persistent, and test their ideas. Following the Scholar-Practitioner-Leader (SPL) model can ensure the likelihood of a successful dissertation. SPL is a blueprint of what a doctorate-level thinker should follow when solving a problem through research. The SPL model has three main principles to be successful during the doctoral dissertation. Every student should implement the theory of practice, scholarship, and leadership. When researching, a student should think like a scholar. In doing this, students should be able to think about a problem without a solution. The first step of a great researcher is being able to identify a problem exists. During the research phase, it is crucial to have credible sources like peer reviews, apply theory and concepts learned in class, and have open dialogue. The counterpart of identifying a problem is to understand that not all problems can be solved. A partitioner is driven by results and the ability to solve a problem. The SPL model creates a symbiosis between the two by considering problems and how to solve them. A successful partitioner explores cause and effect and deciphers between meaningless data. They see the bigger picture, how it connects, and how it will be relevant. Once all questions are answered, a partitioner can take steps in leading innovation. The final step in the SPL model is leadership. Leadership is having the ability to guide a team without the act of micromanaging. It combines knowledge and experience, allowing everyone to collaborate when researching and solving problems. “A leader who empowers others unleashes their ability to act on behalf of their area of work or expertise and provides them with an opportunity to grow and improve. When a leader empowers a team member, they give them a set of guidelines to work in and then leave them alone to do their work. A leader who empowers others unleashes their ability to act on behalf of their area of work or expertise and provides them with an opportunity to grow and improve. When a leader empowers a team member, they give them a set of guidelines to work in and then leave them alone to do their work.” (Varney, 2023) Applying the SPL model while writing a desertion is an excellent start to succeeding. Skills learned in class, as well as communicating with peers, all contribute to a successful dissertation. Varney, D. J. (2023, May 31). 10 Qualities of a Good Leader. Hi Melody The Scholar-Practitioner-Leader (SPL) model is a great way to help scholars stay on track during their dissertations. It focuses on critical thinking, quality research, and leadership skills. All qualities will help improve performance in any management or director title. The core values learned during this program will allow us to be exemplary leaders in our profession. Graduates of a doctoral program “Demonstrate their competence in creating new models to explain, predict and improve performance of organizations in their doctoral discipline. “ (Smith, 2013). These skills are transferred into our work life to lead our employees to think for themselves and trust their skills to complete day-to-day tasks. Smith, P. R. (2013, October 12). The Scholar, Practitioner, Leader Educational Model: Making Leadership Education Relevant. PA Times, pp. 15-16. Cassandra Carlin 9/7/23, 3:49 PM After analyzing the components of the SPL model ( Scholar-Practitioner-Leader model) I do see how it will help connect the pieces between scholarship, practice, and leadership. According to McCaslin (2017), the Scholar, Practitioner, Leader Model (SPL) is the educational framework used by the School of Advanced Studies as part of its doctoral programs. This innovative and dynamic model focuses on supporting lifelong learning (scholarship), social and workplace contribution (practice), and the ability to exert positive influence (leadership) on the scholar/practitioner/leader at the intersections of their academic, professional, and personal lives. My understanding of SPL model is its a combination of leadership skills and knowledge that is built over time in individuals that will create an impact on the workplace and our local communities. I also think that its really a model that will help form us as leaders to communicate more effectively, to think outside of the box, to have grit and resilience. Also I think that communication is at the center and must be a key focus. As a scholar I want to work to develop these skills and apply them to ensure that our collective discussions turn into actions that can make an impact on our work places and our communities. While building out skills that will promote communication and inspiration of others its important that we as leaders are able to understand the information and play the part of a truly effective leader by promoting dialog that can create real change.
Hi Casssandra I agree that the “SPL model is a combination of leadership skills and knowledge built over time in individuals that will create an impact on the workplace and local communities.” The Scholarship Practitioner-Leadership model is designed to be used as a whole. Each part depends on another to be successful. To adopt this model, one must understand the importance of thinking and the ability to identify problems in all life pathways. Once this phase is achieved, a scholar must understand how to substantiate research to solve said issues—finally, leadership. Being a leader is a skill that can be mastered to gently push and support other individuals to create lasting change in an organization or community. “Over the past two decades, higher education has dramatically increased its efforts to provide leadership education programs aimed at developing influential leaders across several industries. While these leadership programs can vary in their intended outcomes and the development of leaders for a particular context, many programs are designed to develop influential community leaders. (Sowcik, 2023) Our program is one of the programs that are developing these leaders. Following core values and a clear pathway in our doctoral studies will prepare us for lifelong problem-solving and innovations in the workplace. Sowcik, J. f.-N. (2023, August 02). Developing Cultural Humility in Leadership Education Programs to Promote Community Leadership. Journal of Leadership Studies, 17 (2), 66-74
