Anthony Roberts Stud# 2259228 CJ-330 Leadership and Management in CJ 2/17/2024 6-2 Short Paper: Transformational Leadership As a transformational leader, this leader is strongly positive no matter what is going on with their work, life, or that day. Also, transformational leaders are really energetic, super enthusiastic, and very passionate about what they do every day. "Transformational leadership is a leadership style that can inspire positive changes in those who follow. Transformational leaders are generally energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate."(Kendra Cherry, 2023). Another thing is that transformational leaders are constantly involved with everything going on and not behind closed doors, yelling at everyone. They want everyone to love what they do and make sure everyone is successful. "Not only are these leaders concerned and involved in the process, but they are also focused on helping every member of the group succeed."(Kendra Cherry, 2023). Transformational leaders can be someone who can lead and follow to make sure everyone gets to the highest level of morale and motivation. "According to Burns, transformational leadership can be seen when "leaders and followers make each other advance to a higher level of moral and motivation."(Kendra Cherry, 2023). Strong transformational leaders keep a regular workflow for their departments. However, these leaders that use or have this form of leadership tend to use disciplinary actions and incentives to keep their employees motivated so they will perform at or over the highest level of the department. This style of leadership has developed this skill, which will help the department
reach the next level. Another style that transformational leaders help departments with is building a strong department, helping with motivation within, and listening to their employee's ideas to ensure the department has a better work atmosphere and a better place to work. Transformational leaders will always give the employee or employees under them full benefits of receiving all incentives for their hard work, but on the other hand, they will give anyone under them the freedom for personal and professional growth. The transformational style and traditional leadership styles are totally different in many ways. The first thing is that a traditional leader does everything themselves and does not ask for other employees' input on what they are working on or doing. "However, as a traditional leader, you have to make decisions alone. This requires unwavering confidence built upon knowledge and experience."(Mollah, 2023). However, the transformational style will do a round table meeting and ask for everyone's input and then make a decision on the input they got from the employees. Another thing a traditional leader will do is use their power to say things to get their employees to meet a deadline. On the other hand, a transformational leader will get out there and motivate their employees and help them to make sure they make the deadline. One of the biggest things with a traditional leader is they are focused only on the compliance they get, and once that happens, they will beat the employee up about that compliance. However, a transformational leader will focus on the commitment they get and make a big deal out of the commitment, make sure that the employee feels really good, and let all the other employees know about the commitment. These two styles of leadership can play a good role when it comes to being a manager in the criminal justice line of work. These two styles can both have a beneficial reaction to a department, no matter what. Leaders who follow the traditional leadership style have a way of
addressing a small group or small department with details very quickly and efficiently. They also can have guidelines put in place that will help with building a more substantial reputation, but also keeping their officers highly motivated to work at the next level in the department. The two styles are both needed in the management role and are used in two different ways to achieve success within the department. When a leader is determining which style fits them the best for what is going on, it is a great idea to have both styles just in case you need to try a different approach to what is going on. Having both styles will allow any manager to be flexible in any situation and be able to complete the mission or goals no matter what is going on during that day. References: Kendra Cherry, Mse.
