Learning Strategies Reflection Lakira West EDUC200 04/10/2023
Elementary Reading Instruction˸ A Balanced Literacy Program In the Balanced Literacy Program, the approach that was used by this teacher was both Whole language approach and Phonics. While the whole language approach to reading stresses that children should use language in ways that relate to their own lives and culture.(5-2a) The phonics approach teaches the reader to “decode” words by sounding out letters and combinations of letters.(5-2a) Using both approaches help give the students more to explore with reading. Being able to learn in the language arts field and sounding out words and letters. In this video the teacher started off with a read out loud group setting. While keeping the class engaged by asking questions about a particular word in the reading. The phonics approach was used by having the students sound out words that were in their reading. Using different reading stations gives the children multiple access to the words and being able to play with those words. Using guided reading and writing, along with shared reading and writing. Two pros I took from this reading was how the teacher had the different stations and was able to create that space where the student not only gets to interact with one another but also that one on one time the teacher is able to create. I love how the teacher breaks down the writing process with certain words. Building words, spelling words. I honestly didn’t have any cons about the video. To me the teacher had a strong lesson plan. The teacher used this approach to be sure her students her hitting all the components needed for successful readers. Using the balance literacy method I would pick a different strategy to target daily for the students to complete. One day we would focus on certain words from the text and how the word was used. The next day I would have the class break up the word learning the origin and different definition of the word. I will give the class group assignments so they can work using the word in their own way. Some lessons would include a phrase from the book. Allowing the students to first explain what they think the writer meant and dissecting the reading to understand the true meaning.
