UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE OBJECTIVES Kenslee Bain ELL240: Linguistically and Culturally diverse learners Laura Rowe September 5, 2023
THE IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE OBJECTIVES AND HOW FACTORS OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION CAN ALTER LANGUAGE OBJECTIVES. Language objectives being implemented can be a powerful first step in making sure that English language learners have equal access to the curriculum even though they are not proficient in the language. Language objectives show the functions and skills that they need to have to be able to participate in the lesson and meet the standards. Everyone can benefit from language objectives, they clarify and outline what academic language is needed or needs to be learned to master a lesson. “Learning objectives are lesson objectives that specify what language students will need to learn and use in order to accomplish the goals of the lesson (Himmel, J. 2012).” Students who are not proficient in reading the English language would most likely not be able to determine what all needs to be done to complete a lesson, which could alter a language objective. Students who cannot speak the English language would not be able to participate as much in lessons that require them to speak. The language objective would alter if the Language Learner was not able to speak, read, write or listen to the language, they would not know what to do to complete each lesson.
TEACHERS UNDERSTANDING LANGUAGE GOALS AND HOW TO EVALUATE LANGUAGE OBJECTIVES “The language objective that the teacher selects will depend on what the English learners in the class need most at that point in the year and what language is most important to understanding the content concepts (Himmel, J. 2012).” Therefore, teachers need to understand the language goals so that they can plan lesson plans to better suit the students and understand exactly what needs to be taught and what objectives need to be used to obtain that goal for that particular lesson. For example, “when creating measurable and student friendly language objectives that support content objectives it is important that learner tasks in the lesson are aligned with he objectives (Himmel, J. 2012).” Careful lesson planning is a key step in preparing effective language learners. Depending on the acquisition level of each language learner the language objective in each domain can differ. When reading a language objective a language learner could see a symbol such as a pencil to indicate that they need to write during that lesson. Using language objectives in speaking the teacher would have to clearly state exactly what they are wanting from the assignment and even repeat it a couple times for the Language learner to understand. Writing would most likely consist of the language learner writing their vocabulary words that are to due with the lesson that the teacher is teaching. Listening would be a hard learning objective for a English Language learner because they might not catch all of the requirements of the assignment, they could have a hard time hearing the teacher or not fully understand what they are saying. Each domain would differ with language objectives due to the teacher teaching them in a different way than another teacher.
