Kriscia Tomasino Sanchez NMA1 Task 3 ELL teachers and professional growth opportunities The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is an organization that supports ELL teachers in their professional growth. This is an international platform that offers a variety of resources and in which teachers share lessons and other resources with other professionals. TESOL also offers conventions, workshops, online chats, and conferences. Teachers have many opportunities of professional growth by attending either in person or online to any of these options. There are a lot of resources accessible through https://www.tesol.org/ . TESOL has the opportunity to participate in an International Convention and English Language expo for all its members that have gathered up more than 6,000 educators to participate in the exchanging of ideas and resources. ( www.tesolconvention.org ). Teachers can also publish their own work such as books, articles, and newsletters through TESOL. One more options available through TESOL is networking and finding new career opportunities. (TESOL n.d.). The National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition (NCELA) is another organization that provides professional support and growth opportunities to ELL teachers. Teachers can have access to multiple tools and resources via https://www.cal.org/what-we-do/projects/ncela . NCELA works with the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OELA) to provide data and resources to educators. This option also provides some resources to families so they can participate in ELLs learning progress. (NCELA, n.d.).
Kriscia Tomasino Sanchez NMA1 Task 3 There is a high burn out rate for teachers overall and ELL teacher aren’t the exception. Participating in professional development can contribute to lower this burning out level as it helps find more strategies to work with ELL students and be more effective at lesson planning. Teachers may find new ideas on how to engage students in a fun and successful way by enhancing instruction and strategies. They may also be able to find other ways to collect and analyze data to help develop new teaching strategies and a better learning environment. Techers can also learn more about cultural differences to create a safer learning environment for everyone. Being a contributing member of the professional community by participating in organizations that offer professional development is very important. It provides access to educators around the world and an opportunity to view different points of view and styles of teaching. Another reason to participate in professional development is that it not only offers professional support but also in a personal level. Teachers can also develop better communication skills and support each other by listening to each other and share knowledge at the same time. Self-Assessment SOE Dispositions and Ethics Two SOE Dispositions and Ethics that present an opportunity for my professional growth for me are Considering one’s view, idea, or behavior may be wrong, incomplete, or harmful (Empathy) and Advocating for equal access to technology for all learners, especially historically underserved populations
Kriscia Tomasino Sanchez NMA1 Task 3 (All Individuals Can Learn). I think I would try to find professional development that helps me work on understanding others’ behaviors and how they can affect someone’s learning. I understand some students may benefit from picking and designing better strategies to learn based on those behaviors. Teaching ELL students can be challenging but students with special needs and learning a new language is more difficult. Advocating for such students to have access to technology to help in their learning. Technology can improve their opportunity of learning a new language as it provides better access. Strengthening and broadening professional knowledge is very important as it is to be an active member of the professional community. As an ELL teacher, I can contribute to a professional organization by creating and sharing ELL lesson plans in different content areas. I can also share my personal strategies with other colleagues during professional development sessions. By doing so I would contribute by demonstrating these two SOE Dispositions and Ethics: Belonging and Professionalism. Sharing knowledge with colleagues creates a sense of belonging but it is also part of being a professional individual. Participating actively as a member of a professional organization is important to all ELL teachers as it can be a tool to help develop and improve not just teaching skills but interpersonal communication skills. As an active member you have the opportunity to be informed of current events affecting the ELL community and what others are
