If content area standards are provided for every grade level, why are English language proficiency standards necessary? How do you plan to use ELP standards as a teacher? How would you explain what they are and why you use them to an ELL parent?
According to Fenner & Segota (n.d.), ELL students must master both academic standards and English language proficiency standards (ELPS). Academic standards do not help teachers teach ELL students English because they automatically assume students are proficient in English (Fenner & Segota, n.d.). Instead, ELPS support and ensure the academic achievement of ELL students (Fenner & Segota, n.d.). To implement the ELPS in my classroom, I plan to become familiar with the standards for my grade level and use them intentionally while teaching academic standards. Throughout my instruction, I plan to give ELL students ample time to practice newly acquired English language through reading, writing, and speaking. I would explain to parents of ELL students that ELPS are standards set by state to help students who have
a different native language learn and master English. Additionally, I would ensure parents understand that the standards are meant to benefit the student and be integrated with academic standards for students to acquire English language proficiency.
