EDUC 3055 Discussion 3 As the American classroom becomes more diverse, social studies teaching face the challenge of promoting unity while appreciating cultural and ethnic differences. This can be achieved by assigning group work that requires reaching a consensus on values, exploring artifacts to understand other cultures, and integrating foreign languages while studying a region. The diverse classroom presents a unique opportunity for teachers to cultivate habits of mutual respect and celebrate differences. At the same time, it allows them to explore themes of unity by examining the things that bring us together. By fostering an appreciation of one another in the classroom, teachers can pave the way for stronger connections with the broader community. When watching the video on teaching unity through diversity, Ms. Jones aspires to read books written by Americans. Growing up, she enjoyed reading, but there was no representation of characters or situations that she and her family could identify with. She talks about coming to the U.S at the age of 19 and being misunderstood by her roommate. She also discusses how the negative stereotypes of Africa only show one side of the story, which perpetuates a social problem of not seeing the full picture of what Africa truly is. Consider using Kahoot and Zoom can be a great way to promote diversity in the classroom. students can also use the zoom to talk in groups to socialize. Ms. Frances's class has a lot of diversity, with the majority of students being Latinos and the rest having a wide range of cultural differences. To be a culturally responsive teacher, it is essential to create a learning environment that is engaging and accessible to a broader range of students. As a teacher in today’s multicultural classroom, it is becoming increasingly necessary to foster culturally responsive teaching practices. According to the Census Bureau, by 2020, more than half of all students in US public schools will be minority students. Therefore, figuring out how to meet the diverse needs of students with differing economic and cultural backgrounds, not to mention varying learning styles, has become a top priority for educators. 2020 Census. (2020). To become a more culturally responsive teacher, it is important to have cultural knowledge and follow some practices. I will get to know my students, make the classroom a judgment-free zone, adapt teaching practices, and teach for all cultures. References: 2020 Census. (2020). United States Sences.
