The reason I chose the questions I did for my director to answer is because my dream is to one day open a center of my own. And I know that we already have bilingual children in our center, not so many economically challenged families because we are a center that cares for MISD employees. I know we have one family that receives assistance from WTO. So I think that my interview questions will assist me in the long run when I open up my own center. I also chose these questions based on what I read in my book. My first question was " What are some techniques your school uses to help bilingual children?" I came up with this question with the support from chapter 4 section 4 in the book. It talks about classroom activities and what needs to be in the classroom to help bilingual children feel welcomed and help promote language development in their language. The next question I asked was, "If there was a situation where a parent wasn't able to provide for the child, how would the center help provide?" I asked this question, because I was genuinely curious on how the center would react to the situation. I know that I buy extra snacks for when children do not have snacks. I couldn't
find anything from the book to help me support my question. My third question was "How does the school support teachers who have bilingual children in the classroom? I came up with this question from reading Chapter 4 section 4, this section specifically talks about program planning and training for staff on second language instruction. My fourth question is "How does the center assess children with language barriers?" I pulled this question from Chapter 4 section 3b, and it talks about how you should assess children who are second language learners, and strategies that teachers of language learners should follow. My fifth question was "Does the curriculum provide both an equal opportunity for both English and Spanish speaking students at the
center?" I asked this question based on my reading from Chapter 5 Section 5 and 8. They both talk about language use in all areas and if the lesson plans are developmentally appropriate and useful for both languages. My final question was, "Does the center provide training to the staff to help support bilingual and economically challenged families?" I chose this question as well because I knew our center didn't provide training for us, so I figured it'd be a really good food for thought. I used support from Chapter 5-6 describing the program and lesson planning process. This section talks about teaching techniques and strategies based on what staff members feel to be best practices learned during a teacher training or experience. Helping staff choose the best practice for lesson planning for the children in the center. The techniques I use in my classroom are promoting multiculturalism, in my classroom I
have multicultural books in my library, my toy labels are in English and Spanish, my baby dolls are of different races, and I am trying to learn Spanish to help better accommodate my bilingual children that come into my classroom. My most favorite technique would be getting training with knowing how to support my bilingual children, I think this is beneficial because I get support I need from my supervisor and my fellow employees. But I like to do things on my own and learn how to do it on my own, so getting training in this specific area would be beneficial to me. I don't think any of these techniques are my least favorite, I think all of these techniques are beneficial for a child care center and if they lack these techniques they would definitely help the program grow professionally.
1.
What are some techniques your school uses to help bilingual children? -
The techniques used to help bilingual children are promoting multiculturalism. Our curriculum is bilingual. Teachers label toys in English and Spanish. They are also encouraged to learn words and phrases in Spanish so the children who mostly speak Spanish, understand what is being taught or asked of them. 2.
If there was a situation where a parent wasn't able to provide for the children such as snacks or food, how would the center help provide? -
Parents are required to provide snacks. In cases when a child runs out of snacks, there are other parents that provide extra snacks for such cases, and we would only need to reach out to the child’s parents to ask if we have their permission to give it to them. Sometimes, teachers will provide extra snacks. 3.
How does the school support teachers who have bilingual children in the classroom?
-
Curriculum is provided in both English and Spanish. As a fluent biliterate individual, I try to provide the support when and where necessary to ensure our bilingual children are understanding in their native language. 4.
How does the center assess children with language barriers? -
It is important to take into consideration, when assessing a child, that they fully understand what is being asked of them. If they are not understanding their teacher because of a language barrier, either myself or a bilingual teacher will step in and assess in Spanish. 5.
Does the curriculum provide equal opportunity for both English and Spanish speaking students at the center? -
Unfortunately, while the curriculum used is bilingual, if it is not being implemented completely in both languages, it does not provide for equal opportunities for both English
and Spanish speaking students. While English speakers do thrive because it is in their native language, Spanish speakers tend to not have the same opportunities to grow. Not
everything is being translated to Spanish or provided in Spanish for them to understand. 6.
Does the center provide training to the staff to help support bilingual and economically challenged families? -
This type of training has not been provided to staff to help support bilingual and economically challenged families but it is definitely something we can look into.
