Writer's Sheet
Your name: Aiman Ahmed
1)
Provide the prompt you have chosen plus the thesis statement you plan to use. If possible,
provide the introduction paragraph to help your reviewer.
a.
Prompt- Answer the following: Does the introduction to Ta-Nehisi Coates’s narrative,
“Paranoid Style of Policing,” enhance or hurt his argument? Explain your reasoning.
b.
Thesis Statement- At times, encounters between law enforcement escalate
unnecessarily quick resulting in the painfully avoidable loss of life. Is it responsible to
just point out flaws and fuel further hatred and division in this country or is it a
better alternative to accept our respective roles in society and cooperatively rethink
and reform the dynamic?
c.
Introduction- Each and every state needs a complete overhaul to rethink, rework and
ultimately reform policing/law enforcement in this country. The foundation of what
law enforcement should be, and the incumbent rules of engagement need to be
stated clearly for everyone to know. Only through education, retraining and reform
can Americans overcome the divide and begin to heal…together.
2)
Identify your evidence from the narratives and a one- or two-sentence explanation of how it
relates to your thesis.
a.
Evidence 1: The element of respect, familiarity from seeing each other around the
neighborhood, was present in some shape or form between the “crazy” kid and
Coates’ father which enabled to diffuse the potentially volatile situation. That
respect or familiarity as being a neighbor familiar with each other strife is seldom a
factor in the equation when it comes to law enforcement and lower income
communities.
b.
Evidence 2: The chaos of fear is a factor in all incidents eliciting a weapon and the
response of the police. The officer’s self-control, or lack thereof, is undeniably the
precursor to either de-escalation or the catalyst to disaster.
c.
Evidence 3: Human Beings are not ingrained to be perfect and the only way to deal
with said imperfections is education and reform on both fronts.
d.
Additional evidence: Personal experience that solidified my view of law enforcement,
in a negative way, for most of my life and a comparison of how policing has changed
so much from the 80’s until now.
3)
Identify any concerns you might have that you would like your reviewer to address.
The concerns that I have is that I am not going to be getting fan mail sent to me over the
perspective I have chosen to take on this matter. Another concern if my evidence is strong
enough to prove my case.
