Criminal Justice Journal #1- wk 3 Journal entry #1 wk-3 Prioritize these four purposes of punishment. In your personal opinion, which of the four purposes do you think is the most important? The least? Rank them. 1. Rehabilitation 2. Retribution 3. Incapacitation 4. Deterrence I think the one that is most needed is the Rehabilitation so that way there are more second chances for 1st time offenders or if the offender has a history of substance abuse they can recieve the help they don’t want but need to stay or even get sober. Explain where capital punisment fits into your prioritization. How does capital punishment fit into each purpose? For example, how does capital punishment fit into the purpose of deterrence? Explain. Capitol Punishment for me ranks with the lowest. I don’t believe in giving someone the death penalty and killing someone. I would rather give second chances like Rehabilitation because I don’t think the court takes into account the offender’s family. How would it feel to a little girl knowing a judge didnt care enough to spare a human life and that judge kills her father? 2
Criminal Justice Journal #1- wk 3 Why isnt then the judge and the excutioner arrested for murder or is it just all a power hungry cover-up. Capitol Punishment to me can only be justified for Incapatitaion where you can instead of giving lethal injection and killing a man/woman you can give them life in prison. Explain your opinion on capital punishment using the four purposes as a foundation. How does each purpose you have prioritized align to your personal opinion on capital punishment? It aligns perfectly with my opinion on capitol punishment. I dont agree with capitol punishment in any form. I can live with life in jail but not the death penalty. In my eyes its murder and the judges that convict these cases are murderers but never get arrested or caught because they are given the power to kill anyone they want to. I am very heavy into my faith being a Christian and believing God is the only one who can give and take life. Do the purposes align perfectly, or are there misalignment? For example, if you indicated incapacitation as your highest priority, how does capital punishment align to this purpose? I have Rehabilitation as my highest ranking purpose where capitol punishment is not an option. The rehabilitation program is meant to give offenders a second chance at life and in the community. In either case (alignment or misalignment), why do you think this is? I think they align with what I believe in and what I would fight for in society. 3
