Enacted Cybersecurity Law Abstract
Technology continuously advances every single day and because of that, legislation is having issues with keeping up with the laws regarding cybersecurity. Lack of knowledge in technology plays a big part in why law makers cannot keep up with laws to protect organizations
and small businesses from malicious cyber-attacks. This leads to the federal law S. 770 (115th): NIST Small Business Cybersecurity Act, to help reduce cybersecurity risk in small businesses. By providing resources to reduce cybersecurity risk and information protection, small businesses
can improve their network infrastructure. This federal law is not mandatory, so businesses who choose not to use this resource will be left open for attacks. 2
Enacted Cybersecurity Law The federal law S. 770 (115th): NIST Small Business Cybersecurity Act was approved by
the U.S. House of Representatives in 2017. The intent of this law is to provide resources and support for improving cyber infrastructure and help small businesses manage, identify, and reduce their cybersecurity risks (HCSSTR, 2017). This guidance is provided on government websites. Does this law truly help small businesses, or can small businesses do the research for themselves?
The law helps by using NIST’s global cybersecurity expertise and requiring NIST to provide small businesses with guidance on identifying risks of cyber-attacks. Many small business owners have no idea how to improve their network infrastructure, so this a wonderful tool to have. On the other hand, even though these resources are provided and government websites that can be accessed to look up information, cyber criminals can access that same information. Also, even though information is provided some business owners have little knowledge of technology so improving their network infrastructure is something that they would
have to pay someone to complete. Technology will continue to advance everyday and change the world that we live in. It is even more important now to pay attention to technology and its growth because it is everything we do, from online banking, shopping to online school. It is imperative that federal laws keep up with the advancement of technology. People want to believe in the laws to help them feel safe and secure with the internet and technology. Everyone can be at risk of cyber attacks but creating
ways to prevent that is very important. “Many of the latest cybersecurity laws enacted worldwide
include steps to protect governments and organizations against attacks, as well as safeguarding citizens’ data.
