Intermediate Sanctions

House Arrest:
House arrest includes an electronic home monitoring system that allows the person under house arrest to maintain a job while serving their sentence. Probationaries with children would be able to take part in caring and maintaining a relationship with them that they wouldn’t be able to do behind bars. House arrest gives the people the freedom to potentially do what they want from their home. They have a few exceptions, like going to work, but for the most part they can have visitors whenever they want, they can have whatever food they want, and they get to sleep in their own beds, under their own roof at night. The biggest disadvantage to this would be that the defendants must pay for their monitoring fees in order to have and maintain this privilege. The amount of time that they spend on house arrest is typically longer than their jail sentence might be. Detainees have little privacy as their probation officer may come in whenever they want for a visit.
●
Shock Probation:
This type of probation can be very cost efficient. Many offenders need
rehabilitation in order to become productive members of our society again. They stay in the community, they maintain family ties and work to contribute to their families. Probation helps the offenders recover by allowing them to enter society with a different mindset. The disadvantages that come with this would be that they’re completely unsupervised. Offenders that are a part of traditional probation programs have a reoffending rate of sixty-five percent. There would also be an issue of the community's safety.
●
Boot Camps:
The biggest advantage to this is that boot camp teaches self-control, responsibility, and respect for authority. There are some troubled teenagers who would really benefit from the intense structure and discipline this would provide. The biggest disadvantage would be that the boot camps do not generally include therapy programs. They do not treat underlying emotional or behavioral problems like most teens are struggling with.
●
Intensive Probation Supervision:
Advantages of intensive probation supervision is it would prevent crimes by offering freedom and aid only to those offenders who are not likely to commit a crime again. It would protect our society by placing those under close supervision of non-dangerous offenders while undergoing treatment and rehabilitation in their community. Some disadvantages would be that it's not as effective at reducing recidivism. Relative lack of punishment would increase risks to the community and increase social costs. ●
Forfeiture: It would benefit to punish criminals and deter illegal activity of criminal organizations. It would return assets to the victims and protect communities. The loss of any property without compensation as a result of defaulting on contractual obligations, instead of jail or prison time. When there is non-performance or a breach in the contract,
forfeiture of money, assets or anything else of value that is defined in a contract will result in compensation to the impacted party. ●
Restitution: Advantages would be that it expresses societal condemnation, and it condemns the crimes at hand, which ultimately expresses the unacceptability of that crime for society. Community accountability fails to improve the offender. A disadvantage would be that It would focus on the crimes in the past instead of the present.
●
Fines: Fines would be a more effective way to deter people against repeat crimes. Paying
fines keeps people out of jail which can be very costly. It puts stress on the offender with the accountability of disadvantages are high fine amounts. Disadvantages would be It also prohibits the inability to manage the fines processing system, and the barriers to accessing court. Seeking legal advice and barriers to seeking special consideration. ●
Day reporting: Adult day services also offer greater socialization than could be given in their homes or in a community center. Access would be limited by cost and availability though. The older adults would attend day services by paying out-of-pocket or through medicaid benefits. The average cost per day would be around sixty-one dollars. ●
Community Residential Centers:
Advantages would be that you are in a supportive recovery environment. The offenders would be in a safe place away from drugs and alcohol. You will increase your chances for continued sobriety. You will be held accountable for other people, which is a good thing. Sober houses are very affordable. Bills are usually included in the total monthly cost. Disadvantages is that it can be difficult living with other people. There is a lack of privacy, it can be costly to maintain two residences if you choose to keep your past home. You may be in the presence of relapses of other housemates.
