Chapter 13 Scavenger Hunt
OVERVIEW
This scavenger hunt exercise requires you to research your benefits as a resident of Texas.
LESSON
One of the wonderful benefits of living in the United States is the access to land ownership we enjoy. Many immigrants come here seeking property, which is the foundation of self-
sufficiency. However, private land ownership is slowly dying. More and more restrictions are being placed on property, even by private parties. One of the more "dangerous" threats to property ownership is the government's power of eminent domain. Eminent domain is the right of the state to take private property for public use. This power is been expanded in recent years as the government seems to "take" land from homeowners for its ever-expanding needs. Former state Attorney General Greg Abbott, seeking to curtail this government power, affirmed the rights of property owners in Texas in a "Land Owner's Bill of Rights". Every property owner in Texas should know these rights.
