According to our text, prevention programs are categorized in three levels based on the target. The first level is known as primary prevention and is used to try to prevent juvenile delinquency from ever occurring. The second level, known as secondary prevention, attempts to intervene in delinquency. The last level is known as the tertiary program and is used to attempt to stop the youth from escalating in their delinquent career (Listwan, 2013). Primary prevention programs focus on the conditions that could lead to delinquent behavior (Listwan, 2013). These conditions could include truancy, poor parenting, and prenatal exposure to toxins (Listwan, 2013). An example of this program is the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program. Secondary prevention programs shift the focus of services from delinquent youth and address delinquent behavior at it earlier stages. This prevention program attempts to stop or slow the youth's potential progression into crime by intervening early (Listwan 2013). An example of this type of program is the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) program. This program mentors juveniles to help them get on track. The tertiary program is focused on reducing recidivism among juveniles who are already in the juvenile justice system. An example is probation, teen drug court, or any other discipline that does not include incarceration. I feel that these programs are effective because they offer someone for the juvenile to look up to and someone who will take the time to teach them right from wrong. According to the National Gang Center (2021) “an evaluation of BBBSA shows that those who participated in the program were 46 percent less likely to initiate drug use than those who did not participate” (para. 4). The study also shows that these participants are also 27 percent less likely to initiate alcohol use, one third less likely to hit someone and have better relationships with their parents and guardians.
