Report
Key Problems & Issues Anthony is struggling to stay sober resulting in repeated interactions with law enforcement. His core issue is his reliance on alcohol. It is safe to assume he suffers from alcoholism when considering all the factors of this case. Drinking while on probation, law enforcement interaction, repeated arrests related to the same offense, and a prior DUI conviction will all impact the decision the courtroom workgroup makes on supervision vs incarceration. Available Support Services in the City of Douglasville The Douglas County Community Services Board (DCCSB), along with their Co-Responder Program handles adult case management and will work interdependently with the courtroom work group to connect Anthony with the appropriate level of assistance and support services based on his specific situation. Resources like peer support services, individual and group therapy, behavioral health management, substance use disorder services, and conducting an Addiction Severity Index interview will address medical status, employment, drug use, alcohol use, citizenship, family/social status, and psychiatric status. Peer support services offer Anthony a safe place to meet, share his story, and support his peers who are in all phases of recovery. This should assist him with re-acclimating basic life skills, coping skills, and social interaction skills, all without the aid of alcohol, while starting to recognize and identify triggers. One-on-one therapy with Anthony by a psychologist, clinical social worker, or licensed therapist, can help him get to and understand the root cause of this issue. Intermediate Sanction – Possible Reprecussions Anthony could potentially be facing incarceration because he has a prior conviction and multiple arrests for related offenses. Should he be so fortunate as to have probation continued, he is now potentially facing multiple intermediate sanctions. (Georgia Department of Community Supervision, n.d.) Anthony’s addiction to alcohol is a serious one, and he could benefit from an intensive outpatient program. This should include random drug tests, mandated AA meetings, substance abuse counseling,

group counseling, etc. He might be required to fulfill these requirements by reporting daily at Day Reporting Center. Community service volunteer work that benefits the community could also be required (Georgia Department of Community Supervision, n.d.). Idle time seems to be a trigger for Anthony. Enrolling in an academic program and/or finding and maintaining employment will not only keep him busy but will also help with future career opportunities. This is important, as Anthony’s ability to find work will not be easy. By obtaining a degree or certification he will increase his career options. Random drug testing will help ensure Anthony is complying with, arguably, the most important condition of his probation, and that is to abstain from alcohol, as this seems to be the core issue causing his frequent interactions with law enforcement. Anthony's role – Do the Work By participating in his own treatment, being a law-abiding citizen, and fulfilling all conditions of his supervision, Anthony can prove to the court that he is serious about making a change. It is also important that if, and when Anthony is struggling with his program, to reach out for help. Organization's Role – Bridge the Gap The role of the organization mentioned above is to bridge the gap between Anthony, the courts, and the services that support him in working toward successful rehabilitation. Providing Anthony with these alternative services, rather than incarceration, should enable him to comprehend the seriousness of his charges. Holding Anthony accountable and supporting/encouraging him through this process, while reminding him of his potential punishment for another repeated offense, gives him a better chance of changing the path he is on. Society's Role – Societal Pressure
The stigma and potential obstacles that are associated with societal pressures can be immense, specifically during the initial phases of recovery (Spear, 2018). Anthony will be vulnerable, he will feel isolated, and will also be prone to relapse. He will be surrounded by triggers. These obstacles and the societal pressure they bring will attempt to derail his progress should he allow it. It will be important for Anthony to be surrounded by those who can help instill confidence, courage, and validation for each bit of progress he makes (New Hope Recovery, n.d.).
