BC Government About to Be Shut Down Law Courts Inn
Vancouver, August 9, 2020 – BC government threatens to close Law Courts Inn
Restaurant, the event space founded in 1972, inside Vancouver’s Supreme Court Building.
Since 1972, diners in Vancouver have been able to satisfy their hunger at the Law Courts Inn
Restaurant, which is located on the fifth floor of the courthouse at 800 Smithe Street. The
restaurant is well-known for offering meals such as lunch and breakfast throughout the weekdays
and on the weekends. In addition, the restaurant is well-known for providing meals during the
evenings for its various events and public gatherings.
The Ministry of Citizens Services under the British Columbia government came to the
conclusion that the establishment should be closed after it had been in operation for a number of
years, and it has been telling the owners that they would be compelled to close the business. The
managing director of The Law Courts Inn Restaurant, Sergio Gonzalez, stated that the Society
has been informed by the landlord of the Inn, the British Columbia Ministry of Citizen Services,
that it will not renew their lease after September 30, 2020. This information was provided to the
Society by the landlord of the Inn. Sergio Gonzalez is the one in charge of ensuring that
everything runs well at the restaurant. "Discussions and conversations to better this situation
have not been received with a great degree of receptivity from the Ministry," which means that
the ministry is not very receptive to the idea. They informed the Society that the reason they
were terminating the lease was so that they could construct more offices for the courthouse in the
area, and that this was the rationale for their decision.
There have also been rumors going around that the facility may potentially be utilized by
the government as chambers or office space for judges. However, there is already an abundance
3
of office space available in the downtown area due to the growing number of individuals who
work from home. The rumors have been going around. Gonzalez said that several attempts have
been made by The Law Courts Inn to make contact with the Ministry in order to negotiate the
terms and discuss the lease; nevertheless, the Ministry has not offered any responses to the
inquiries made by The Law Courts Inn. The architect Arthur Erickson made sure to leave enough
space in the middle of the courthouse so that it may one day host a restaurant. This location has
never been intended to be reserved for private use; but, in the event that the government decides
to close the Law Courts Inn Restaurant, the general public will be deprived of the space that it
justly deserves. According to Gonzalez, "The restaurant performs a great public service not only
by hosting a large number of business, social, and public events but also by eliminating room
rental costs for a large number of volunteer and pro bono groups." "The restaurant hosts a large
number of business, social, and public events. "Despite the fact that this administration has urged
commercial landlords to grant rent assistance, none has been provided to us, and we have
continued to pay the entire amount of our rent," Gonzalez said. "Throughout the shutdown, and
despite the fact that this Government has pushed business landlords to grant rent assistance, none
has been provided to us."
Despite the fact that the government had no role in the negotiation of the lease in any manner, the
restaurant never lodged a complaint, so even if they [the government of British Columbia] decide
to still back out of the leasing agreement. The Law Courts Inn, which has been in operation since
1972 and can be found near Robson Square, offers its visitors stunning vistas of the urban
landscape of Downtown Vancouver. To learn how to help and be inside the news, please visit the
