What are the qualifications for serving on a jury? Age: You must be at least 18 years old. Citizenship: You must be a U.S. citizen. Language: You must be able to speak and understand English. Residency: You must be a resident of the state where the trial is taking place. Criminal Record: In most states, convicted felons are ineligible for jury service. In addition to meeting these basic qualifications you may also be excused from jury service if you can demonstrate "undue hardship or extreme inconvenience." This could include things like having a serious medical condition, caring for a young child or experiencing financial hardship Attach your Venn diagram comparing criminal and civil court cases. A disagreement between two or more parties is present in both criminal and civil court cases. In both kinds of cases the law is applied and evidence is presented. A judgment or verdict in either kind of case may be final and binding on the parties. The purpose of a civil case is to compensate a person who has been harmed. the plaintiff must prove the defendant's liability by a preponderance of the evidence. In a civil case, the defendant may be ordered to pay money damages. The purpose of a criminal case is to punish a person who has committed a crime In a criminal case, the prosecution must prove the defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The potential consequences of a criminal case are more severe .than the potential consequences of a civil case. In a criminal case, the defendant may be sentenced to prison.
