THE ROLE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROFESSIONALS
2
The Role of Criminal Justice Professionals
Individuals and the society have their intrinsic needs that the criminal justice system
fulfills. Understanding these needs helps to illuminate the functions that different criminal justice
professionals undertake as their constitutional duty to serve the citizenry.
Individual Needs
Arrests of Criminals
Police officers are effective in combating the happening of crimes and arresting
criminals. Home robbery victims rely on police for prompted security help. The 911 hotline has
bailed out many people out of dangerous situations when thieves or robbers attacked their
homes. Police officers also maintain law and order by ensuring that all the streets, roads and the
entire society operates without criminal happenings (Roth, 2018). In case of criminal
occurrences, they ensure that the perpetrators are found by all means and brought to book.
Criminal investigation officers such as the FBI and CIA facilitate the investigation processes to
find the criminals if hidden and reveal all the necessary evidence (Harr & Hess, 2009).
Prosecution of Criminals
Criminals that are found and brought to book because they executed some crimes must
undergo prosecution. Prosecution happens in the court system and it is legal pathway that leads
to the delivery of justice from jurors. The prosecution is responsible for incriminating the
defendant by producing all the evidence needed against them (Roth, 2018). The witnesses also
contribute to the hearings for the ultimate determination of the verdict by the jury. The magistrate

or jury usually reaches the final decision by evaluating the evidence provided to produce the
deserved verdict for the defendant (Harr & Hess, 2009). Attorneys are also important
professionals in this process as both the plaintiff and defendant can use one. Most individuals
that are victims of crimes often wait for this process for them to have their sigh of relief.
The Trial of Criminals
The correctional system takes the mantle to punish and rehabilitate the criminals found
guilty to serve a sentence in the correctional facilities. Prisons ensure that the criminals undergo
a rigorous transformation process that aims to reverse their deviance to normality by inculcating
them with the required discipline towards life. These facilities also deem the prisoners serving a
lifetime as potentially dangerous (Harr & Hess, 2009). They lock them up for life for the ultimate
benefit of the individual and society.
The Society Needs
Drug Abuse
Drug abuse is a functionally retrogressive phenomenon that has resulted in the birth of
many crimes. Drug lords are the forces behind the societal rot because they facilitate the
accessibility of harmful drugs to new users and chronic addicts. Police officers ensure that the
drug peddlers and lords are arrested and brought to book (Harr & Hess, 2009). The American
society is losing millions of youths to drug addiction and resultant crimes. The officers,
therefore, hugely help in eliminating this vice by investigating and arresting these culprits.

Prosecution of Criminals
In the American society, some criminals often use illegal means to escape their
prosecution. The rationale is that prosecution is the bridge that connects their arrest and
rehabilitation in the prison. The court system, therefore, comes in handy in ensuring that the
accused are brought to book by taking responsibility of their actions through provision of both
verbal and written evidence (Johnson et al., 2018). For instance, a robber caught on camera
brandishing and shooting in a home after breaking in is easily implicated if CCTV footage exists.
The prosecution, therefore, helps the society to prosecute notorious criminals to land them in jail
for their atrocities as a punishment and subsequent rehabilitation move.
Rehabilitation of Criminals
Despite the grave effects of criminal activities, correctional systems work to ensure that
the affected individuals undergo proper rehabilitation when in prison. Prisons, jails and
probationary centers are effective institutions that execute the rehabilitation process effectively.
Some of the imprisoned people transform when imprisoned to become better citizens when
released. These correctional facilities have officers that specialize in counseling to help in the
rehabilitation process of willing inmates (
Roberson & Winters, 2020). Some prisons bring
therapists and other counseling professionals to also aid in this process. For instance, inmates
suffering from depression due to their long prison sentence and self-cursing for engaging in
criminal activities inherently need counseling services.
