Discuss the specific recommendations you would make based on your personal experience and research. After reading about the issues the courthouse is having on their network, there are a few areas that could have been analyzed properly by end-to-end testing. A proper analysis of the bandwidth requirement should have been conducted by the IT company that was awarded the project. The use of proper cabling for a metropolitan area network (MAN) could have resolved this issue. A MAN provides high-speed data communications across multiple LANs (Local Area Networks) with speeds ranging from 10-100 Mbps (GfG, 2023). MANs are comprised of different network topologies such as ring, bus, and star. Some advantages of a MAN include strict security levels compared to that of a WAN (Wide Area Network), supports data transmission in both directions with dual bus architecture, and centralized management and control of the network (GfG, 2023). Disadvantages however include complicated architecture, high cost, and less fault tolerance (GfG, 2023). My specific recommendation for this would be to update the current mix of network topologies and networking equipment. The importance of updating the network topology is to ensure it follows current best practices. Being a MAN, it is typical that the topology follows a hybrid approach, this approach has its pros and cons. Pros to a hybrid solution include the benefits of varying topologies, scalability, higher traffic throughput (ManageEngine, communications@manageengine.com, n.d.). Cons to a hybrid solution include high cost, complexity, lower availability (ManageEngine, communications@manageengine.com, n.d.). Secondly, ensuring that the networking equipment meets the specifications that are required/desired. If the network has a device that does not support the bandwidth that you are expecting this can result in a bottleneck. A bottleneck is an area or device in the network that limits the capacity or bandwidth flow between two or more devices (NordVPN, 2023). Lastly, implementing a form of network performance monitoring (NPM) solution to analyze the network traffic and equipment status. There are many vendors that offer these solutions: Splunk, SolarWinds, OpenNMS etc. Discuss what effective network endpoint design considerations are relevant and how they can be implemented for the company that was mentioned in the story. There are many considerations that should be accounted for when designing a network. The first thing that should be done is to get a good understanding of the stakeholder requirements and how your design will meet those requirements. Common considerations include high performance, cost efficiency, scalability, flexibility, availability, and security (Nettitude, 2020). I would have ensured that the endpoint connections either consisted of 1000BASE-TX to allow for 1 Gbps or 802.11ac wireless connectivity allowing for 1.3 Gbps. On the networking equipment I would have implemented access control lists (security), virtual local area networks (VLANs) for both security and quality of services (QOS), TACACS+ for device management (security and accountability), and a configuration management solution such as Cisco DNA.
Provide specific examples of how you would address the problems that were mentioned in the story. The two major problems that were identified are network congestion and outdated topology solutions. They could have been addressed by completing a proper analysis of bandwidth requirements and using current topology standards. The company that built the MAN could have attached a traffic emulation tool to the end of one of the networks to simulate high volume, this data could have been then used to make the proper adjustments to eliminate the bottleneck they have created. How can you apply the lessons that you learned from the story to your own retail store problem? The relevant lessons learned from this scenario are the need to address network topologies and designing a network that allows for scalability and availability. A proper topology goes hand in hand with a network’s ability to remain both scalable and available. I am looking at a mesh topology that incorporates both physical medium and wireless solutions to allow devices to have redundant access to the network. Using a fiber backbone to interconnect the layer two devices will ensure the network has plenty of bandwidth to support both the current design and any future expansion. References GfG.
