In the video "Owning Your Digital Self: Monetizing Your Personal Data" by
Dana Budzyn, the main takeaways are:
1.
Individuals should have ownership and control over their personal
data. Currently, many companies collect and use personal data without
individuals' knowledge or consent, which can lead to privacy violations
and data breaches.
2.
There is potential for individuals to monetize their personal data by
selling it to companies or participating in data-sharing platforms.
However, this requires transparency and trust between individuals and
companies, as well as clear regulations and policies around data
ownership and usage.
3.
Personal data can be valuable not only to businesses, but also to
individuals themselves. By understanding and analyzing their own
personal data, individuals can gain insights into their own behaviors and
preferences, which can help them make better decisions and improve
their lives.
4.
The current system of data collection and usage is often exploitative
and unequal, with certain groups (such as low-income or marginalized
communities) being more heavily targeted by data collection practices.
Addressing these inequalities and ensuring that all individuals have equal
ownership and control over their personal data is an important step
towards a more fair and just digital economy.
Overall, the video encourages individuals to take ownership of their digital
selves and to actively engage in discussions around data privacy and
ownership. It also highlights the need for systemic changes to address the
current inequalities and power imbalances in the digital world.
Both short video and article are excellent.
Short video with title
Owning Your Digital Self:
Monetizing Your Personal Data
talks about why individuals should know how and where
their personal data is being used and shared. This short video also gives a suggestion how
individuals should take care of their personal data.
I choose the article to summarise the key takeaways.
Title:
A Practical Approach to Data Ethics
As it can be explained from the title of the article, it gives a practical approach to follow data
ethics. It gives the three things to be kept in mind to follow data ethics. The three things are
listed below:-
1)
Failures and Checklists –
The article clearly explained in this section how failures
may occur and it also gives a sample checklist for data scientists to avoid failures
and make data science success in future. My key takeaway in this section is that
failures should be recognised before the development by creating a checklist and
following according to that.
2)
Diversity and Empowerment –
This article clearly gave an idea how to avoid
breaking things by moving fast. It gave an example of how a single team member
cannot do the whole ethical thing because organization cannot care him since he is
the only one. In this situation, empowering the individual can help a lot. Diversity in
team is also required because it can add value to the team’s productivity. This article
also gave an example of how a face detection algorithm didn’t recognize the face
with dark color. Following diversity and empowerment in data science team will solve
these issues.
3)
Data Ethics 5 C’s –
The article gave a great idea to follow 5 C’s to make sure that
products built are a success. The first C is Consent, every developer should take
consent of every individual while developing data science project. Clarity is the
second C, every individual should have a clarity on what data is provided, how it is
being used, what will be the consequences of using that data. Consistency is third C
and it should be required to gain the trust of individual.
Control is the fourth C and it
should be there for every individual to delete the data if he or she changes their mind,
it should be transparent. Consequences is the fifth C and every individual should be
aware of consequences of sharing their data.
In conclusion, I can say that the article is a very good explanation of how to follow
practical approach in data ethics. My key takeaways are
Checklist should be created before developing the project.
There should be diversity and empowerment in the team.
Consent, consistency, control should be given to every individual.
Every individual should have a clarity on how their data is being used and also
they should be aware consequences of sharing the data.
