Read (https://doi-o rg.ezproxy.cs u.edu.au/10.1 177%2F09610 00618788725) This TEDx talk promotes a commercial solution for libraries, however there are some valid ideas about reaching out to clients. We have looked broadly at the concepts behind social media use. In this module we will explore further the impact and use of social technologies in organisations. The Library 2.0 movement began in 2005. With the emergence of social networking sites came the concept of Library 2.0, where libraries and information agencies harness not just the Web 2.0 technologies but the underlying principles (or 4Cs) of Web 2.0: collaboration, conversation, community, and content creation (or co- creation). Thus, participatory library service became viewed as the new service model for library and information agencies. While Library 2.0 may seem like an outdated term now, it is important as it marked the change to a more participatory culture in information organisations. Take a look back at where it began. The following articles capture the information profession's point-of-departure in terms of the development of the Library 2.0 concept. Miller, P. (2005, October 30). Web 2.0: Building the new library . Ariadne. https://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue/45/miller/ (https://www.ariadne.ac.uk/i ssue/45/miller/) Casey, M. & Savastinuk, L. (2010, May 21). Library 2.0. (https://web-s-ebscohost-com.ezproxy.csu.edu.au/ehost/detail/detail?vid=0&sid=09211ba0-dc63-4b6d-a88 e-11a95963f450%40redis&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#db=bth&AN=22171693) Library Journal, 131 (14). Ultimately Library 2.0 has encouraged the information profession to find new ways to connect with their clients, both existing and prospective individuals and user groups. Libraries and information agencies who have embraced a Library 2.0 ethos seek out those social networking sites and platforms their clients use to connect with people, information, and ideas. Has this collaborative way of engaging been successful in all cases? Obviously many factors are involved in any organisational initiative. Williams (2018) outlines some of the challenges in one library environment. Read Williams, M. L. (2018). YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=PnYDl66YfQ0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnYDl66YfQ0) OLJ Task 6: Embracing a Library 2.0 ethos Consider the services discussed by Laura Cole in the video in relation to a library or information agency that you know (as an employee or user). Select four key points made by the speaker, and consider how these may be applied to a library or an organisation you are familiar with to help it embrace a Library 2.0 ethos. Write 300 - 400 words. We have been hearing the term 'Digital library' more frequently than 'Library 2.0' recently. Library 2.0 is a concept that emphasises user engagement, collaboration, and the use of Web 2.0 technologies to enhance the overall library experience. Digital libraries, on the other hand, are collections of digital resources designed to provide easy and organised access to a wide range of digital materials. While they are not synonymous concepts, libraries can incorporate Library 2.0 principles within their digital library systems to create a more interactive and user-centric experience. Read With the emergence of tools such as Twitter, Facebook, blogs, wikis, LinkedIn, virtual reality, and more, it has become important to offer a more customer-driven, socially rich, and collaborative model of service and content delivery from our libraries. Social media has few barriers. It is not about budget or acquiring the necessary tools. In all organisations, new initiatives usually require significant amounts of dollars to kick-start new projects. Libraries and information agencies are no exception. However, working towards a collaborative approach does not necessarily require major start-up funding, but it does require support from management for individuals and/or teams to invest some of their time into exploring the potential application of social technologies. Sometimes it takes convincing arguments to help people see the value in social media tools. Here are just a few reasons why organisations should be taking advantage of these technologies. These set the framework - and through further work in this subject, you will be able to develop a deeper understanding of the issues, choices, and processes involved in getting your organisation involved. Do you think they have a successful social presence? Share your experiences and examples in our Facebook group. Implementation of a social media program or project Implementation of a social media program or project Read Explore Like any initiative in an organisation, social media implementation should be driven by the needs and goals of the organisation and should include an initial identification of your audience or stakeholders. By aligning your activities to the needs of your organisation and your clients, you can help to ensure that precious resources such as time and budget are not wasted on tools and strategies that are the wrong fit for your organisation. Using a project management approach can help an organisation define the rationale, processes, and activities that will contribute towards success. Analysing what goals you are trying to reach and who your audience is before you begin will help you to determine the most effective tools for your particular situation. Admon, A. Read Read Read We have examined some reasons behind social media use in orgainsations. The flexible nature of these platforms and the ease of use prompts the question, why do we need a strategy? Information Systems Frontiers , 20 (5), 1097-1116. doi: 10.1007/s10796-016-9714-2 Social media activities have become part of 'business as usual' in many organisations, but as with any organisational activity they are most effective when used in a coordinated fashion. Social technologies, as part of their nature, are often less formal than other business processes. There may be no monetary cost to the organisation to implement social tools, and without a defined strategy this can lead to an approach that does not fit the needs of organisation or its clients. These days, this gathering of data and analysing data to understand how your sites are being used is not just for 'big business'.
