5-1 Assignment: Impact of Cyber Crimes
Ashley McIntosh
Southern New Hampshire University
2
The type of crime that took place in the article is “Techno-Crime at work”. There was a
breech in Target’s security system where cyber attackers were able to get access to customers
personal information. This information included their email addresses, phone numbers, full
names, credit card information and other information. This breech of security took place across
all targets across the United States, it wasn’t just limited to one or two targets. This affected the
customers who shopped at target because not only would their personal information be stolen but
their credit card as well. Also, there wasn’t an accurate estimate of how many people had their
personal information stolen and their credit care information stolen as well. This means the
individuals who stole the victim’s personal information could open new credit cards with their
information and they could use it to their benefit. It could affect the victim’s credit score and they
would have to report it as fraud, which could take quite bit of time to sort out.
One way this crime affected Target’s business is that it alters customers trust with the
company to keep their information safe. Another way this affected Target is that it has to shell
out a quite bit of money to rectify what went wrong. Not only does Target have to pay the
customers who were affected by the crime but they also have to hire people to investigate what
went wrong and back track who was affected. An obvious consequence to Target being a target
of this crime is the loss of customers. If consumers feel as if their personal information is going
to be at risk shopping with Target, then they lose out on revenue.
I know that on social media there are people on the internet who contact me daily
claiming that they want to send me money but to receive the money I must send money for it to
be deposited. I’ve never fell into the trap because I recognize it as a scam. I also have seen
people claim that if you send money to a specific person, they can double the money they send to
you. For example, if I send $350 then the individual can turn it into $3,500.
