Activity 3.4
1.
What I Learned
Include any major points of knowledge about what you
learned or understood more clearly after completing the activity.
What I learned with this activity is that not everything with the command center
must be serious and important. Your also able to install, do, and make funny stuff
within the command center. I also realized that apt and apt-get don’t do the
something most of the time. Like I went to try and install something and it denied
saying nothing was there to uninstall. I though apt-get meant installing, though it
can me uninstalling an app previously installed that is not wanted on the computer
anymore.
Next Step
1.
How do you use the ‘su’ command and what changes?
The ‘su’ command is used to run function as a different user. It’s the easiest way to
switch or changer to the administrative account in the current logged in session.
You use ‘su’ like this, there is 2 ways:
$ su - <username>
Starts a new login shell as another username specified.
Sets up shell environment as if this was a proper login as that user in the system.
$ su <username>
Starts as a non-login shell as the username specified. Just
launches the new shell with the current user environment settings, without
invoking other username shell variables.
As you can tell the only thing that changes is the username and possibly the shell
environment. Along with granting a one-time or limited-time access to root
functionality.
2.
Can you disable SELinux? (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DISABLE OR ENABLE IN
YOUR UBUNTU MACHINE)
Yes, you can disable SELinux. When you disable SELinux the policy is not loaded at
all; it is not enforced and AVC messages are not logged. Therefore, all benefits of
running SELinux
“Benefits of Running SELinux” are lost.
3.
Can you add additional repositories?
Yes, you can add additional repositories. There are four main repertories which are
Main, Universe, Restricted, and Multiverse. There’s literally thousands of Ubuntu
programs available.
4.
What fun apps did you install using the CLI on Ubuntu?
The apps I installed were as follows:
1)
sl – steam locomotive
2)
figlet – draw banner
3)
fortune
4)
cmatrix – The MATRIX
5)
cowsay
6)
toilet
I did try a couple of other ones however the system couldn’t find or just wouldn’t
allow the install.
