After completing the “Hands-On Exercise: Passively Monitor a Wireless LAN,” located in
Chapter 4 of
Designing and Deploying 802.11n Wireless Networks
, describe the difference
between having encryption turned on and turned off. Explain why there was a difference, if
any
Hello Class,
Having encryption turned on means that it is protecting data from being stolen, changed, or
compromised and works by scrambling data into a secret code that can only be unlocked with a
unique digital key. Compared to having the encryption turned off means unauthorized users
could gain access to the network and obtain personal information or use the internet connection
for malicious or illegal activity. I looking at the same packet roughly from the same destination
IP address and comparing the two together the only thing that was showing differently is the IP
address from the WLAN and source port was showing differently and everything else was
looking the same but overall, without effective encryption an unauthorized person can listen in
on wireless LAN data transmissions.
