It compares a person's unique genetic markers to a database of known markers. This technology is widely used in criminal investigations and has applications in medicine, anthropology, and genealogy.
DNA analysis has played a crucial role in law enforcement as it has helped solve cold cases, identify missing persons, and prove the innocence of wrongfully convicted individuals. In criminal investigations, DNA analysis provides reliable and accurate evidence that can be used in court to determine whether a suspect is guilty. From a community perspective, DNA analysis helps to increase public safety by identifying and capturing dangerous criminals, thereby making communities safer.
DNA analysis presents challenges for law enforcement due to its cost and time-consuming nature, which can limit its widespread use. Collection and storage of DNA samples can raise privacy concerns while creating false leads and falsely accusing innocent individuals. Misuse of DNA analysis can lead to distrust of law enforcement and violation
of privacy rights. It is crucial to ensure strict protocols are in place to protect the individuals involved.
Laws and policies exist to regulate the collection, use, and storage of DNA samples. The DNA Identification Act of 1994 established guidelines for the use of DNA analysis in criminal investigations. Additionally, many states have their laws governing DNA collection and analysis.
