61. Health Information Exchanges or HIE’s: A.
Research Health Information Exchanges (HIE’s)that are currently active in the state of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. List the name of the current HIE and summarize some main points that will tell others what this Health Information Exchange does and how information is shared facility to facility, health provider to health provider and health provider to employer when applicable. Are there any privacy or security provisions that are built into this HIE? Do patients automatically get enrolled? Do they have the option to “opt out” of being included? -The Vermont Health Information Exchange is active right now. The services that they provide are consulting, data access and contribution for healthcare facilities. Their goals are to create a health record for every person, improve health care operations and to use data to enable investments. The HIE allows for healthcare workers to access and securely share a patient’s vital medical information electronically. There are three key forms of HIE which are directed exchange, query-based exchange and consumer mediated exchange. B.
Express some possible future challenges that you could foresee in the Health Information Exchange area. For example, what might this look like in the future? Do you think it would be possible to have an HIE for the entire United States? Worldwide? -The technology part of healthcare is becoming more and more advanced each day. HIE’s are used to refill medications, increase patient safety, and to avoid redoing testing. But the biggest problem with having everything online, is the hackers. They are finding more and more ways to access information. I think having different networks for each state/facility would be the more secure and safest way to keep patient information safe.
