1. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of biometric authentication?
Biometric is a measurement of an individual’s unique physical and behavioral characteristics. There are advantages and disadvantages to using biometric authentication.
Advantages:
Being unique to each person makes it difficult to steal or fake authentication
Generally, the same on the person throughout life and unlike a pin or password cannot be forgotten
Easy and convenient to use
Templates take less storage to use
Disadvantages:
Biometric systems can be expensive to get started and still have opportunities to fail
If the user gets injured can lead to issues, ex. burned fingertips can lead to loss of fingerprint
Database can still be hacked and is more desired by hackers
Privacy Concerns
Unlike pins/ passwords it cannot be changed
2. What concerns should privacy advocates have about biometrics? Do you agree or disagree with the concerns?
Some concerns are linked to the disadvantages noted for biometric authentication. The use of biometrics raises the concern of even more personal information being hacked or just stolen. As well as once biometrics are set up, they cannot be changed, such as passwords. Unfortunately, attackers will have access to accounts with biometric authentication until that form of login is removed. Although valid concerns, I do not agree it should deter a person from setting up
biometric authentication. It can be used in conjunction with logins, although difficult to steal, can be removed if needed. Privacy also becomes a concern where it is considered people will be monitored. Where that is another valid point, I do agree on it does expose an individual to be tracked and how they look to unwanted parties.
3. How can the accuracy of two biometric systems which use different human characteristics be compared?
A way to measure the accuracy of biometric systems would be to measure the performance metric of false match rate (FMR) and false non-match rate (FNMR). Which measures the number of times invalid logins are accepted or valid logins are denied. Additionally, factors such as environment and distance can play into the overall accuracy of biometric recording.
