2 Micronic Technologies Micronic Technologies is an organization founded in 2008 by Karen Sorber and Kelly Rock to implement a revolutionary wastewater cleaning technology. During Karen's 2007 Peru trip, she was devasted to witness the challenges children experienced due to unclean water. She was inspired to focus on sustainability strategies and technology that advances water purification systems. Consequently, the organization's water purification system is branded the Tornadic One-Pass (TOP), which focuses on harnessing the power of a tornado and scientific involvement to acquire clean toxin water (Vane, Rock & Jordan, 2022). The Tornadic One-Pass technology would be used to remove contaminants from any water source and clean to state and federal standards without using chemicals, membranes, high heat, filters, or high pressures. Micronic technologies use advanced technologies and ensure the personnel understand the strategies and mechanisms used to ensure clean production water. In order to provide a brief understanding of the steps involved, the organization uses micronic wastewater treatment technology influenced by a tornadic flow device (pod), which shears a wastewater stream into micro-droplets. In addition, the structured flow path causes a vortex and has no moving parts (Vane, Rock & Jordan, 2022). Therefore, the vortex containments from the water vapor produce a near-zero liquid discharge concentrate and clean water product. The expected outcomes for the TOP include a reduction of wastewater volume by more than ninety-five percent and about ninety-nine percent of the contaminants disposed of. In addition, the end product, clean water, is estimated to cost fifty percent less than competitive technologies. The organization began its operations with about eight-million-dollar development funding, key strategic channel partnerships, eleven patents issued, and three pending patent applications. In 2022, the organization was featured by the Environmental Protection Agency
3 (EPA) as a water technology (Micronic Technologies, 2022). Moreover, TOP partnered with EPA for a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER). The organization was selected due to its water-cleaning technology and focus on developing solutions for disposing of water treatment residuals. In this case, the organization shows the effectiveness of its TOP closed-loop mechanical system, which re-captures clean water. Generally, applying TOP is considered one of the most effective and efficient technology applications, whereby near-zero liquid discharge provides nearly a hundred percent water reuse. Currently, the organization has launched the final engineering project to commercialize the pilot and technology at customer sites within the year (Micronic Technologies, 2023). Laboratory tests, supported by third-party analysis, have granted a pass and support that the system's effectiveness is expected to drive prosperity, improve public health improvements, and ensure environmental stewardship towards the community. It is crucial to analyze the background and procedures used to reach the finalization for the use of TOP technology to reuse wastewater. In addition, the case meets all the criteria since it involves strategies to develop sustainability management strategies that would benefit society and become a crucial resource for future generations. The company also involves disruptive deep-tech innovation that has the potential to lower costs and increase the efficiency of water production compared to commercial solutions. In addition, the extraction of value products such as critical metals and rare earth elements from concentrated waste serves as an economic benefit to local communities.
