CMIT 425 Week 1 Discussion: What is the business value of Cybersecurity certifications?
It's indisputable that every business with internet operations has to have employees certified in cybersecurity.
Many people have questioned the usefulness of cybersecurity certificates, yet companies still prefer to recruit
someone with substantial experience in the field. While it's true that every business could use a dedicated
cybersecurity team, the best way to ensure everyone on staff has the necessary knowledge and abilities is to
require them to pass a certification exam. Cybercrime is increasing in the United States and elsewhere as people
grow increasingly dependent on the internet and mechanical systems. In light of this discussion, the value of
cybersecurity credentials as a job requirement becomes more apparent.
Since more and more people are relying on the internet and computerized services, this is particularly true.
(
Cybercrime - United States Department of State
2023) Cybercrime is on the rise in the United States and across the
globe. The argument has helped to highlight the value of having cybersecurity credentials in the professional world.
Individuals may demonstrate their skills in a particular task or profession by obtaining professional certifications. In
this context, "expert online protection confirmation" refers to a job brought by a network safety expert to confirm
their capabilities to do tasks linked to network safety.
One of the most respected credentials for I.T. and security specialists is the (Messina, 2023) Certified
Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) designation. One of the many benefits of professional
certifications to businesses and other organizations is that holders can demonstrate that they are among the most
knowledgeable and experienced in their field. This is especially true for cybersecurity certifications like the Certified
Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). (University, 2023) There are many advantages for businesses and
organizations when all of the employees hold professional credentials. Some of the advantages are that certified
experts are more likely to follow established norms in their field. That means the company can trust these experts
to help it achieve its goals and the standards set by its industry. Clients' trust in the company grows, which is an
additional benefit. Professional certifications are helpful because they provide proof of an individual's competence
in a given field. (
The value of Certification
) Employees with certifications have a better chance of being hired than
those without; thus, getting one makes you more marketable to employers. Qualified employees are more valuable
to their employers because having some professional credentials in the cybersecurity field also helps reduce the
need for micromanagement on the job. External review, evaluation, education, or audit certify the certifiers of
professional certificates. Recognition does this by establishing criteria for vetting and approving certification
agencies.
This procedure is crucial to verify that all certifications are legitimate and aligned with professional standards.
(Irwin, 2022) In particular, ISO/IEC 1704 conformity assessment checks certifiers to ensure they follow the rules in
the international standard (International Accreditation Forum, Inc., 2009). In the context of cybersecurity,
certifications are vital because of the role they play in mitigating potential threats. Professionals who have earned
the CISSP certification have the knowledge, abilities, and framework for minimizing cybersecurity threats.
Professionals with this and other relevant credentials are not only more informed but also more responsible.
Hacking, which includes unauthorized entry into I.T. systems, is one of several hazards that may be reduced by
mandating the certifications of cybersecurity personnel.
All cybersecurity personnel should have credentials to reduce the risk of hacking. To maintain their certifications,
businesses must ensure that all employees and anybody with access to their internal networks always operate
ethically, following all company policies and practices. (Islam, 2018) Thus, it's less of a chance of cyber-attacks due
to this. In cybersecurity, employees with credentials can help reduce and lower the risks of cyberattacks. Because
knowing how to spot security vulnerabilities and risks in a system, they can take countermeasures to mitigate the
impact of any attack. Or prevent it. They can also build a robust protection system from the outside world and
safeguard the information stored on the cloud or in local servers. Having a team with all the necessary credentials
in the cybersecurity field will help businesses and organizations protect their private data and safeguard their
customer's confidential data.
Professional credentials have become essential for people who took I.T. security as their job environment. Over
the last ten years, the number of people achieving the job I.T. security certificate has grown dramatically. The
increase reflects not only the rapid growth of people entering the I.T. security area but also the increase in the size
and variety of available certifications. (University, 2023) The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 31% increase in
the number of jobs available in the field of cybersecurity between 2019 and 2029. Because of this, employment
opportunities for those trained in cybersecurity are promising. These now range from highly technical, vendor-
specific certifications to those which protect a wide range of data security in a product-neutral way.
