In your initial post, address each of the following:
Choose one estimation practice from the resources provided in module readings and
review its pros and cons.
Consider a project from work or school that you estimated poorly before. Briefly describe
the project, then identify one or two agile estimation practices that could have helped you
improve the project estimate.
Hello class,
I hope everyone is ready for Thanksgiving! The estimation practice I would like to chose from
the module readings is Planning Poker. This is sometimes also referred to as “Scrum Poker.
Simply, Planning Poker is a consensus-based Agile planning and estimation approach that
guesses how much time may be needed to complete different backlog iterations.
PROS:
-Straightforward: great for those who may have never used estimation techniques in the past.
-Collaborative: Planning Poker involves the whole team, ensures use of continues negotiation
and understanding from the different perspectives of team members.
-Adaptive: it doesn’t require any type of formal plan or process to be followed in order to be
successful.
-Efficient: helps team estimate time and effort required for project and backlog.
CONS:
-Limitations: Planning Poker doesn’t work the best with more complex tasks, doesn’t guarantee
any exact timeframe. Also, high restraints regarding remote team collaboration.
-Confusion: Not every member of the team may up to speed or on the same level of
understanding in the process, so there is no guarantee that everything will get done for the
benefit of the team and product.
-Time Consuming: Depending on team size and the overall size of backlogs, Planning Poker can
be highly time consuming.
One project I severely underestimated was actually during hurricane Katrina while living
down in Florida. At the time I was running a smaller construction company of my own and
whenever Katrina came through and we had so much work to do. Working FEMA contracts
mainly repairing roofs, but one thing I really underestimated was the amount of labor this
required. At the time, I had about 6 guys working for me, but with the amount of money on
the line and some of the time constraints in these FEMA contracts; it would have been much
more beneficial for me to have planned and hired more labor going into these contracts.
Something such as the Planning Poker or T-shirt sizing approach could have been beneficial
for me back then because it would allow me to better track how much time or effort these
jobs may have taken.
Strength & Honor,
-Joe W.
In your responses to your classmates, identify additional agile estimation practices that could have
helped improve the project estimates. Explain how the practices could work with the practices
already defined.
Hey Cheryl,
I hope all is well and you are ready for some food tomorrow! I too am a data nerd. I’m particularly
fascinated with graphs for data with my server because it gives me an easy-to-understand representation
of what is doing what and for how long. Using this, it is easy to compare data moving forwards or moving
backwards.
I think one great agile estimation practice that could have helped a bit with you Python class is
something like Planning Poker or T-Shirt sizes because it gives you a god estimation of anything needing
to be done and potential ways of thinking outside the box to achieve it. Something like this would also
assist in kind of breaking the process down a bit like you described.
Best,
-Joe W.
Hey Peter,
I hope your week is off to a solid start and you are ready for some Thanksgiving food! I know I’m
particularly ready for the Banana Pudding (Deserts are my fav part about the Holidays). Very well said
and put together. Affinity Grouping is something I had little understanding of moving into this Module
but have a bit better grasp on now. You done an excellent job of kind of simplifying the process a bit for
me to understand as well, so thank you for that.
As in my other response, for the project in your first class I would recommend something like Planning
Poker or T-Shirt sizes practice because it its rapid, gets many perspectives, and comes up with several
different solutions. Like you, especially in the beginning my schedule was jam packed so I ended up
cramming everything together, so I was doing a lot of it last minute, making my work harder. Any of the
practices you or I mentioned could have helped us in breaking the process down and coming up with a
solution.
Best,
-Joe W.
