LEA5130 Team Building and Group Dynamics

Week 1. Discussion
In this week’s scenario it seems that the team is used to being a highly motivated team and as the team dynamics has changed the motivation has diminished. Intrinsic motivation involves the doing of an activity for its inherent satisfaction rather than for any obvious external reward. Extrinsic motivation is a construct that pertains whenever an activity is done in order to attain some separable (Nickerson, 2023). One intrinsic motivation that is influencing a change in this team performance is the purpose to participate in a team and feel good about it. Prior to the new member joining, the team performance was high and more than
likely each member felt good about the team and was motivated to participate to maintain their high performance. In a situation when a team has high performance, each member is self-motivated to perform their required task as well as take on new tasks, show very little change in behavior and have self-enjoyment in their responsibilities. Since the high performance of the team is no longer present and the team is now experiencing workload increase and overworked, the intrinsic motivations of satisfaction and purpose they previously
had are no longer present. The team members are feeling like they are losing control of their team dynamics. An extrinsic motivation that is influencing a change in this team’s performance is the rewards the team earned from their high performance. When the team had a high performance, they were probably rewarded by the organization leaders with some type of compensation. Now they are probably being pressured and/or punished by the leadership team to regain that prior success of being high performers. The new member’s lack in growth, knowledge base, and managing their responsibilities is hindering the team which is affecting the other members motivation to strive to achieve those rewards they previously earned.
Every team faces challenges and is up to the leader to ensure the motivation of the team remains during difficult times. As a leader, I would solicit input from the team members on how to overcome the challenges and get back on track as a team. It is important as leaders to communicate effectively to your team but also just as important to listen to your team’s concerns, suggestions, and
feedback (How to Overcome Motivation Challenges as a Leader, 2023). The advantage of receiving feedback from the team members is continuing to build that trust between the leader and team member. It also shows the team members that they are valued, heard and you are open as leader to their suggestions. Another advantage of receiving input for a solution is a team member may provide a solution that can be effectively applied to the current situation which may help improve the team dynamics, motivation, and overall outcome. On the other hand, the danger of soliciting input from the team could increase the frustrations the team is experiencing. The team members are already feeling overworked, and experiencing being burned out, and asking for their input may result in negative feedback as well as behavior towards the new member. The leader should acknowledge there is an issue and or challenge amongst the team but encourage helpful feedback to improve the current situation to eliminate or mitigate some of the negative feedback that may occur.
Overall, as a leader when challenges arise it is important to deal with them immediately to retain the motivation of your team and keep the team moving forward. Communication is key between the team leader and the members. Keeping open communication will help address some of the challenges and find quick solutions. If these challenges are not addressed in a timely manner it could lead to a team’s dynamic being lost and continuous performance issues of the team.
