Catherine Stringfellow GUI/Usability Evaluation Assignment REPORT This report outlines the design and development process of a Mortgage Calculator GUI. It also includes a usability evaluation plan that was conducted to test the effectiveness of the GUI. A log of project-related material and design decisions was maintained throughout the process. GUI DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT: The GUI was designed and developed using Visual Studio. The application consists of five forms, including a main form, a new mortgage form, an open mortgage form, a save mortgage form, and an about form. The main form includes a menu, a tool bar, and minimize, maximize, and close boxes. Users can start a new mortgage calculation, open an existing calculation, save a calculation, apply extra principle, exit the application, and access the about window. The new mortgage form allows users to enter input data on mortgage amount, interest rate, and number of payments in months. The main form displays both the input data and the resulting data for all payments, including payment number, principle paid, interest paid, total principle paid, total interest paid, extra principle paid, and balance of the loan.
Catherine Stringfellow GUI/Usability Evaluation Assignment ADHERENCE TO DESIGN GUIDELINES, PRINCIPLES, AND THEORIES: The Mortgage Calculator GUI adheres to several design guidelines, principles, and theories. In terms of layout, the use of blank spaces effectively separates controls on the form. In addition, consistency was prioritized throughout the application. For example, the terminology used on the forms is consistent, using "Mortgage Amount" on both the main and new mortgage forms. Furthermore, the Schneiderman's Golden rules were considered when developing the application, including striving for consistency in terminology and using feedback to provide confirmation to the user. USABILITY EVALUATION: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the usability of the Mortgage Calculator GUI. Participants were asked to complete a set of tasks using the GUI, and their task completion time and number of errors were recorded. The experiment was set up in a controlled environment, and participants were provided with a pre-test questionnaire to gather demographic information. A statistics book was consulted to determine how to set up the experiment effectively. Data analysis will include descriptive statistics, such as mean and standard deviation, to describe the participants'

SUMMARY : In conclusion, the Mortgage Calculator GUI was designed and developed using Visual Studio, adhering to several design guidelines, principles, and theories. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the usability of the application, which included a set of tasks and data analysis using descriptive and inferential statistics. The process of designing and developing the GUI and conducting the experiment provided valuable insight into the importance of adhering to design principles and evaluating the usability of an application.
