During this term choosing an EHR for Alpha Corporation to transition from a hybrid
system of paper documentation and electronic scheduling was not an easy task to go from the
very beginning to the end. The system life cycle is a great way to classify each step of the
process. According to Newbold, S.K. the four phases are 1) planning 2) analysis 3) design,
develop, and customize 4) implement, evaluate, support, and maintain. This approach is
considered a scientific approach to problem-solving.
The evaluation phase includes the planning and analysis of the process of recommending
a new EHR system for Alpha Corporation. The planning phase would include looking at the
project proposal, the scope of practice of why it is needed, planning out the resources needed and
looking at the structure of the project. After the planning phase is over the stakeholders would
implement the analysis phase which would include reviewing the technical requirements of the
new EHR system and reviewing the functionality of the design and how the system would work.
The implementation phases would include the design, develop, and customize phase and
the implement, evaluate, support, and maintain phase. Within the first phase of implementation
there are multiple parts to follow. For design you would want to include the technical and
functional capabilities of the system and along the way develop specific and goal-focused plans
to make sure that these are following what the company needs. The last part of the first phase of
implementation is the customization. This includes making sure all the staff profiles and logins
are set up correctly, the previous data from the older system is rolled over, policies and
procedures for expectations of the new system are written along the way.
The last part of the implementation phase also includes multiple parts. The biggest part of
this would be to implement the system including the plans that the stakeholders put in place,
train on the policies and procedures and be there for the go live of the system. Evaluating
constantly after the go-live date is important for any malfunctions or concerns that come up that
can be fixed immediately. Having ongoing maintenance and upgrades is the last part of the
implementation phase as EHRs are constantly improving and changing. The importance of
having a team dedicated to keeping the system in top shape is important.
EpicCare EHR systems are not only user friendly, but they do offer specialists dedicated
to the company to help work out any issues and be there for questions and training that they may
need. They follow the system life cycle process with a company to help transition a company
into using their system. They will be there to talk you through the planning process, help
customize the system for the company’s needs, install the system where needed, and train staff
before go-live date and afterwards. They will not write the procedures and policies for the
company as that is specific to the company.
