Value Stream Maps
Value stream maps are one of the tools of Lean manufacturing. VSM visualizes the flow of a single
product or service from supplier to customer, with the aim of identifying delays and processes that don’t
add value. VSM provides that clarity for us by charting the flow of work through the different steps
involved in the development/delivery of a product or service (Mathenge, 2020). Value stream mapping is a
lean management tool that helps visualize the steps needed to take from product creation to delivering it
to the end customer. As with other business process mapping methods, it helps with introspection
(understanding your business better), as well as analysis and process improvement (Dhruv, 2019).
Example of Value Stream Maps
Software engineering/development
- To find inefficiencies in software development, from idea to
implementation, including feedback loops and rework. Although some critics question the value of VSM in
an agile development environment, others find it useful to gain efficiencies, such as reducing the wait time
between steps or reducing the need for rework.
Healthcare
- To improve the steps required to treat patients in the most effective, timely, cost-efficient,
high-quality way possible.
Process Maps
Process mapping is a management tool that is used to visualize the flow of work within a business
process. A process map shows the steps and people involved in a business process. It is important to
understand the different roles and functions of process diagrams, process mapping, and process
modeling. Creating a process diagram is the first step in creating a business process model. It is a simple
representation of a process that merely lists tasks in sequential order. A process map is the second step
in creating a process model. The map includes a higher level of detail, listing things like the employees
involved and events. A business process model is a complete visual representation of all aspects of a
process (Eisner, 2020).
Example of Process Maps
The four most common types of process maps include Flowcharts, Data Flow Diagram, Swimlane
Diagram, and Value Stream Mapping. Choosing the one that aligns with the objectives is an important
step.
Payment receipt process
– An oversimplified example of a process map for a Payment receipt process
would be where payment is received, registered in the system, the payer is informed, and the process
ends (Veyrat, 2016).
Recruiting -
Recruiting has traditionally been a time-consuming and tedious HR task. Recruiters are
increasingly turning to automation solutions like robotic process automation (RPA) to sort through
candidate applications and place them into different categories based on their qualifications. The first step
in a workflow could be when a candidate submits a resume. From there, the RPA solution reviews and
scores the candidate and decides whether an interview should be scheduled. The candidate is then
notified, an interview is conducted, a decision is made, and an offer is extended (Eisner, 2020).
Value Stream Map vs Process Map
Criteria
Value Stream Mapping
Objective
An effective way to establish a strategic direction fo
improvement
Perspective
End-to-end
Improvement Period
It is executed as a strategic improvement plan over
months
Granularity of work
Macro-level
Involvement of People
Heavy leadership involvement
Advantage 1
Can be easily and fast performed
Advantage 2
Simple to learn and understand
Disadvantage 1
Only one type of product can be analyzed
Disadvantage 2
It is difficult to work with new technologies
